Alvaro Bautista Targeting Second Group at Laguna Seca Race

Alvaro Bautista Laguna Seca 2012

After a difficult first day at Laguna Seca yesterday, Alvaro Bautista made important steps forward in final free practice and qualifying today. Alvaro improved his confidence with his bike around this track and made up positions to qualify seventh on the grid, a position he hopes to improve on with further improvements to his set-up ahead of tomorrow afternoon's race.

Alvaro Bautista ( 7th 1’ 21” 732 )
"Today went quite a lot better than yesterday – the only disappointment is that we hardly got any laps in this morning because of the fog and that probably cost us the opportunity to take another step forward. Anyway we managed to try a couple of different settings out and in the end we found something positive which improved my confidence on the bike. My pace also improved so that's good. Obviously we are still not at 100% but we have taken an important step. A third row start isn't bad and if we can get away well off the line we can hope to stay with the second group because the front three are on a different level. My objective is to rediscover the feeling I had before Mugello and have a good race."

Fausto Gresini
"Compared to yesterday we have taken a big step forward with Bautista and seventh place on the grid is not bad – it will give us the opportunity to run with the second group and hopefully fight for a result between fifth and seventh"

Engine torque map Q&A with Renault's Rob White

Red Bull came under the spotlight at Hockenheim last week after the FIA questioned the legality of the engine maps controlling their Renault V8s. Stewards gave them the all clear, but it prompted Formula One racing's governing body to issue a rule clarification ahead of this weekend's Budapest round. Rob White, deputy managing director of Renault Sport F1, sums up engine mapping and the latest developments

Leon Haslam Strips Down to Promote WSBK at Silverstone

World Superbike's next stop is Silverstone, and BMW Motorrad's resident Brit was willing enough to bear all to help promote WSBK's stop at his home round. Stripping his leathers down to his waist, Leon Haslam got his torso and arms painted by by double World Body Painting Champion Carolyn Roper. Taking three hours to complete the effect, Roper's work is pretty phenomenal, as was Leon's patience. Check after the jump for the superb photos by the UK's renowned photographer Gary Prior, along with a time-lapse video of the whole process. Don't worry ladies, we have embedded the full-resolution photos in the post, while the "smaller" 2000px photos are in the gallery.

Ducati extension for Hayden

On the occasion of the United States Grand Prix, the home race for two-time Laguna Seca MotoGP winner Nicky Hayden, Ducati announces a contract extension with the American that will see him continuing to race for the Ducati Team next year. Nicky Hayden, who turns 31 on Monday, is currently in his tenth season in the MotoGP series and his fourth with the Ducati Team. During that time, he has become extremely popular with fans and Ducatisti all over the world, thanks to his reliably positive outlook, his passion, and his determination. He currently sits eighth in the championship points standings and is working hard on the development of the Desmosedici GP12, employing his typical effort and enthusiasm. The United States hosts no fewer than 45 DOCs (Ducati Owners Clubs) and tomorrow thousands of fans will have the opportunity to meet Nicky at Ducati Island, an area at Laguna Seca where Ducatisti gather to follow the race and experience the "red passion." Following the afternoon qualifying session, Nicky himself will visit the Island's stage, where many spectators and fans will no doubt be excited to join him in celebrating the news of his renewal with the Ducati Team. "I'm very happy that I'll be back with Ducati and back in MotoGP, racing at the highest level for a very important team", Hayden said. "I love the guys I work with, I love the Ducati fans, and I love the brand. This is an important time for Ducati in a number of ways, and I'm excited that I'll continue to be a part of it. I feel like I've got some unfinished business here, and hopefully we can get all the pieces into place and reap the rewards of the hard work we've put in the last couple of years. It's nice to be able to make this announcement at Laguna and to share the moment with my fans, friends and family. If I can do a good result on Sunday, it could make for a pretty special birthday weekend."

Eric Bostrom Racing the Brammo Empulse RR at Seca

After its performance at the first TTXGP round at Sonoma, the Brammo Empulse RR returns to racing in California this weekend at e-Power/TTXGP round being held at Laguna Seca. With Steve Atlas on the mend fielding one entry, and Steve Rapp unlikely to take another chance on the Oregonian machine, Brammo has tapped Eric Bostrom to ride its second race entry at the iconic sea-side track. Bostrom’s involvement with the team has been fairly hush-hush, though ...

Penrith re-visited

Having been hosted in the Scottish Highlands for the last two years, the British Trial GP returns to south of the Scotland / England border for this weekend's two-day encounter that will bring the 2012 FIM Trial World Championship to a close. The Nord Vue venue near Penrith was last visited in May 2009, when it was the third stop of that season's tour. Not surprisingly it was Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa who was dominant here three years ago with back-to-back day wins at this hill top setting. However whilst Toni was winning, his team mate Takahisa Fujinami - Repsol Montesa was crashing, and heavily. So much so that a nasty fall towards the end of the opening lap saw the ever-popular Japanese rider forced to retire and take a trip to the local hospital for further investigations. With no broken bones confirmed, typically Takahisa was back in action just twenty-four hours later and was rewarded for his brave efforts with a fighting fourth spot and was only one mark away from a podium finish. Dougie Lampkin recorded one of his last ever rostrum places in front of his home fans on the first day of a well supported event by British Trial fans.

Stefan Bradl Takes RCV to San Francisco and Stanford University

Stefan Bradl San Francisco's infamous Lombard Street and Treasure Island

LCR Honda rookie Stefan Bradl took to San Francisco's infamous Lombard Street and Treasure Island with his Honda RC213V yesterday as he prepared for the upcoming Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca this weekend. As part of a Red Bull promotional video, the German rookie delighted crowds in true MotoGP fashion, as he wheeled his way around Treasure Island, before bringing a hefty exhaust note to the usually quaint Californian town, winding his way down twisty Lombard Street, much like he will at "The Corkscrew" come Friday.

Later in the afternoon he was joined by LCR team owner Lucio Cecchinello to take part in a conference held at the prestigious Stanford University, named "Embracing Risk in the Pursuit of Victory". It was a discussion about the balance between embracing risk and protection for safety, highlighting the advancements made by man and machine in one of the fastest forms of motorsports.

Stefan: “Basically we were there to train the Corkscrew (laughing)! At the beginning we were a bit scared about the asphalt temperatures and tyres pressure but at the end everything worked well and we had fun. After that we moved to Stanford University to join an interesting discussion with Lucio and the public there was very curious about the several aspects of a MotoGP rider preparation (physical and mental) and the Team attitude to embrace risk. Anyway… I am looking forward to Laguna GP, but I know it will be more difficult for me compared to the other races. I have been there some weeks ago riding a Honda Fireblade for a first taste. For sure we will work harder compared to the last tracks which I knew already and we must be sharp and careful with the setup of the bike, because we have no data. It’s a new track for me and this means double effort for me. Every Friday is a new discovery for me, because all tracks seem new on a MotoGP bike, but in this case it will be even more complicated, but I am not worried about it. We are in a good shape.”

Motion Pro Square Drive Spinner T-Handle

T-Handle sockets can be found in just about every professional bike mechanic’s toolbox thanks to their ability to make many jobs easier and faster. If you’re looking to add T-Handle convenience to your toolbox, but don’t want to worry about fitting an entire set, Motion Pro has the answer in their square drive Spinner T-Handle.

The Motion Pro Spinner T-Handles feature your choice of ⅜” or ¼” sizes so that you can snap your own sockets right on and go right to work. Similar to standard T-Handle sockets, the Spinner has a lot of reach, allowing you to get into hard to reach areas without losing the leverage you need to break loose a stubborn bolt. The feature that sets it apart from others is the addition of floating spinner grip on the shaft of the tool. This lets you firmly hold the socket in place while spinning it freely in either direction. To further aid in the spinning of the tool, Motion Pro gave it a heavy, rubber coated handle that gives you a comfortable grip.

The Motion Pro Spinner gives you the same speed and convenience of a standard set of T-Handle sockets, but with a lot of added versatility and a lifetime warranty. You can order yours from Riders Discount by getting in touch with Brad at 866.931.6644 ext. 810, or by sending a PM through this forum. If email is more convenient, feel free to send one to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

MotoCzysz Performance Parts Coming Soon?

Since the Isle of Man TT, I have been hearing some talk about MotoCzysz developing some performance pieces for mainstream market consumption. Since the MotoCzysz crew is now busy making electrons go faster than the speed of light, the obvious candidate for the rumor would seem to be the company’s 6x-flex fork, which was originally tested on a Honda CBR1000RR and would only need some basic adjustments in order to fit modern dinosaur-burning motorcycles. While ...

Alvaro Bautista Wants to Finish Laguna Seca Race

Alvaro Bautista Mugello 2012

Alvaro Bautista ready to take a positive result at Laguna Seca circuit this weekend after a good result on the Mugello test event. Alvaro Bautista never take Laguna Seca's finish line since his promotion to MotoGP class.

Bautista said, "Mugello was a difficult weekend for us. I was desperate to perform well in the team's home race, especially with the livery going back to white, but unfortunately we had a lot of problems using the hard tyre and that prevented us from finding a set-up that we liked. I never managed to find a good feeling with the bike so wasn't able to push it or myself to the limit."

He continue, "Since returning home I have been working hard on my physical fitness and I went down to Albacete to watch the Spanish Championship race. Now I want to rediscover the pace and feeling for my bike that I had before Mugello. It would be nice to have a 'normal' weekend so that we can work on maximising our potential and being as competitive as we have been in the last few races. A good result would set us up for the next few weeks and also put some bad memories to bed for me in MotoGP at Laguna because I have yet to actually finish a race there."

He added, "Laguna Seca is a difficult circuit with dramatic elevation changes and blind corners where you have to anticipate the entry point in order to get the best line. It is important to have a good setting on the bike otherwise your job on the track gets much more difficult. There is a wonderful and unique ambience there with there only being the MotoGP class and the atmosphere created by the American fans is fantastic."

Ducati Laguna Seca Preview: Rossi and Hayden Excited

Valentino Rossi Mugello 2012

The first of two American stops in the 2012 MotoGP Championship will take place on Sunday at California’s spectacular Laguna Seca circuit, a beautiful and challenging track that winds through the hills east of Monterey.

The United States Grand Prix is very special for Nicky Hayden, as it was the site of his first GP victory, in 2005, and of another win the following season while he was on his way to the world title. Valentino Rossi is also fond of the track’s unique atmosphere and old-style layout, which played host to a win for the Italian in 2008, as well as to three additional podium finishes.

The “stars and stripes” round is also important for the company from Borgo Panigale, for whom the United States represents the most important target market, and one that is continuously growing, as Americans have long associated Ducati with quality, technology and exclusivity. As is the case every year, the Ducati Island will serve as a meeting point for the many Ducatisti who will come to support the Ducati Team and its riders over the weekend.

Valentino Rossi
“Laguna is a difficult track, with many bumps and a lot of elevation change, but at the same time it’s beautiful and fun, in part because it’s rather old-style. I really like the fans and the general feel. Although my last test at Mugello was ended early, we were able to begin working with some details, and we’ll probably be able to use some of them at Laguna, even if we’re talking about a small percentage of the package that they’re working on at Ducati. Last year we went okay at Laguna, so we’ll see what happens this weekend.”

Nicky Hayden
“Of course I like Laguna, so I’m excited to go there and see my home crowd and all my friends in the AMA paddock. We’ve been getting a little closer to the front lately, but now is no time to rest. We have to keep working, because now the gains will be more difficult. Laguna is certainly not easy, and I doubt the lap times will be much different with the 1000s than they were with the 800s. I’m not even sure we’ll use sixth gear, and as was the case at the Sachsenring, we’ll probably spend a lot of time working with the wheelie control and just trying to use that power when it’s available. The new tyres should work better at Laguna, especially in the colder mornings and on the right side. My goal is clear: go there, have fun, and try to get the best result of the season.”

AMA Press Release

Nobuatsu Aoki Takuma Aoki

FCC TSR Honda ahead of the Suzukis

FCC TSR Honda, winners of the 2011 edition and already in the lead after the tests at Suzuka in early July, are still in control after the practice sessions conducted in Japan today for the 2012 Suzuka 8 hours. On board the Honda, Jonathan Rea, Kosuka Akiyoshi and Tadayuki Okada wrapped up the second session with a lap in 2'09.523, just ahead of the two Suzukis entered by the Yoshimura Racing Team and the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team, who are practically neck and neck. On the Japanese GSX-R, Leon Camier, Josh Waters and Nobuatsu Aoki lapped in 2'09.639, a smidgen faster than the French Suzuki ridden by Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Yukio Kagayama in 2'09.684. Only these three teams managed to creep under the 2'10 mark. The Honda Musashi RT Harc Pro with 2010 winners Takumi Takahashi and Ryuichi Kiyonari on board in the company of Hiroshi Aoyama, and the Monster Energy Yamaha YART ridden by Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Tommy Hill and Noriyuki Haga, make up the top 5 after these free practice sessions for the Suzuka 8 hours, third round of the 2012 FIM Endurance World Championship. The BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent is also well up the field. Sébastien Gimbert, Erwan Nigon and Damian Cudlin chalked up a 2'10.330 lap, coming in sixth in today's practice session. Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube played it safe, scoring the twelfth best time. David Checa and Kenny Foray are on a mission to bring back points from Japan after their disappointment at the 8 Hours of Doha in June. The French official Yamaha will have to manage without Matthieu Lagrive, who underwent surgery a few days ago for a torn ligament in his elbow. A further four permanent teams will be taking the start at this 35th edition of the Suzuka 8 Hours. Half-way up the leader board after these first practice laps we find the Kawasaki of Bolliger Team Switzerland and the Honda TT Legends. For its first outing in Japan, the Suzuki R2CL is finding its marks and currently lying beyond the 40th spot. For Team Flembbo Dijamant Serbia, the learning curve is looking a little steeper, as they are currently bringing up the rear. The first qualifying practice sessions will take place tomorrow morning in Suzuka, where the forecast is for more sunshine and a temperature of 35°C. You can follow the race on Sunday from 4 h 30 (GMT +2) on FIM-LIVE.COM with the "LIVE TIMING" set up by Tag Heuer, and get regular live updates on Twitter For the latest pics, visit www.flickr.com/photos/fim-live/
