2013 Phillip Island World Superbike Weekend Round Up

The opening race weekend of the year was at a freshly-resurfaced Phillip Island, a job that's needed doing for a while that required building an asphalt batching plant on the island. This 3 million Australian dollar undertaking that required 5,000 tonnes of secret Phillip Island recipe asphalt even carried on into the weekend as support staff were seen pumping seams of epoxy resin into newly formed gaps at the edge of the track after the stresses of the first race.

Pirelli knew of the surface composition in advance, being one of the few people sworn to secrecy by the track owners, and constructed tyres accordingly. The grip levels on the track were increased, causing more abrasion than previously and in the Superbike class, the wheels were increased from 16.5" to 17", throwing two unknowns at Pirelli. Luckily, there were two tests at the island track just before the race, giving everyone the feedback necessary. Unfortunately, the proximity of the test to the race would not give anyone time to make drastic changes, if they became necessary. Going in to the race weekend, this thrust tyre talk to the forefront of any conversation, drowning out even discussions of Ducati's new race bike.

MotoGP Sepang 2 Test Day 1: Pedrosa is Fastest, While Bradl Impresses

Dani Pedrosa has taken up at the second Sepang MotoGP test where he left off after the first. The Repsol Honda man led for most of the day, having set a fast time fairly early in the morning. His rival at the Factory Yamaha squad did much the same, Jorge Lorenzo taking 2nd a couple of tenths behind Pedrosa. Marc Marquez continues to impress, the Spanish prodigy ending the day with the 3rd fastest time, ...

Crutchlow and Smith back in action at second Sepang test

Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith enjoyed a positive start to the second MotoGP test session at the Sepang International Circuit today, the Monster Y amaha Tech 3 Team riders both finished inside the top 10 on a rain-hit first day.

Crutchlow was fast straight out of the box this morning and a time of 2.02.272 set on only his fifth lap put him in second position. But a slippery surface and

Dani Pedrosa leaves Sepang test on top

The third and final day of MotoGP testing at Sepang is over and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa closed out the first official 2013 pre-season test on top of the timesheets for the third consecutive day as the session wound down with the appearance of rain in the final hour, effectively freezing lap times, that again improved from yesterday, with five riders under the 2.01 mark.

Pedrosa’s best lap was in 2.00.100 and done on his fourth lap out of the 44 he completed and breaking the official Sepang race lap record and the pole record, but not Casey Stoner’s 2012 Sepang test record. Finishing Honda’s testing programme early, Pedrosa packed it in at 3pm, leaving the rest of the field to try to play catch-up.

Jorge Lorenzo made a quick start also in the morning and with his fourth lap he stopped the clock in 2.00.429, 0.329s slower than the Repsol Honda rider and unable to improve in the afternoon session and he finished 2nd, again. Team mate Valentino Rossi also finally made it under the 2.01 and he finished third and just 0.113 from the reigning World Champion, but it took his 43rd lap to get him there.

Marc Marquez fell to fourth, but the MotoGP rookie took his first tumble with the RC213V in the morning, harmlessly lowsiding (his lean angles wore out the leather on his elbow) out of the final hairpin in the morning session, but he returned to track to post his best time of the day in 2:00.636.

Cal Crutchlow finished fifth and he too was able to dip under the 2.01 barrier once, the same as Rossi. Stefan Brad seems to have recovered from his health problems as he was sixth and just 0.269s from the Yamaha satellite rider and the last rider to be within a second from Pedrosa.

Alvaro Bautista concluded the day in 7th and ahead of a highly impressive Bradley Smith who is continuing his learning process with the satellite M1.

9th and 10th went to Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso who shaved off only some thousandths of second from Wednesday’s lap times. Pramac rider Andrea Iannone was the only other Ducati rider to cut a couple of tenths of a second from his previous day that put him in 13th and little more than 7 tenths from veteran Ducati rider Nicky Hayden. Team mate Ben Spies decided to sit out the entire day of testing, because of general soreness, as he is still recovering from his shoulder injury and hasn’t been able to train.

Michael Laverty is also another rider who impressed in these testsm as the MotoGP newbie and PBM’s CRT rider started slowly to climb the charts and concluded the day as the second best CRT rider with his 15th spot leaving behind him riders like Randy de Puniet, Danilo Petrucci and Colin Edwards.

MotoGP testing will be returning to Sepang for another three days of testing from February 26th to the 28th.

Teams have trouble getting useful data from testing | 2013 F1 season

Teams have trouble getting useful data from testing is an original article from F1 Fanatic. If this article has been published anywhere other than F1 Fanatic it is an infringement of copyright.

Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber, Circuit de Catalunya, 2013F1 teams begin their final four-day test in preparation for the new season on Thursday.

But for several reasons some have had difficulty making the most of the running they’ve had so far.

At the first test at Jerez the abrasive track and cool conditions made gaining useful information difficult. Williams chose not to bring their new car to the test as technical director Mike Coughlan explained:

“To begin with we didn’t plan to do Jerez at all,” he said. “We only did Jerez because Pirelli were bringing their new tyres and we felt it would even be better with the old car so we had a known platform.

“I’m sure a lot of people who went to Jerez with a new car, new driver and new tyres got lost. We didn’t.”

Coughlan listed Jerez’s shortcomings as a testing venue: “It’s very unique, very high degradation, really aggressive, very rear [tyre]-limited”. “We don’t even go to a track that’s similar,” he added.

Williams ran their 2012 car at the test and focussed on learning as much as they can about the new generation Pirelli tyres: “We came away with a very good understanding of the tyres, what we can do on pressures and cambers.”

“With the current breed of rear suspension it’s very difficult to do damper changes and bar changes and spring changes. So it gives you an opportunity to prepare lots of things. Different types of damper, things like this. Things you can’t do in a [practice] session because it takes too long, when you’re trying to understand the tyres.”

However Coughlan says he would have preferred to test the new car at a more representative circuit: “If it’d been three Barcelonas, we’d have done them all with the new car.”

“I think we’re happy with Barcelona,” he continued. “Barcelona is very good, we all have lots of simulations of the Barcelona track. I think Barcelona is fine, it’s very easy to get to, cheap flights, good hotels, nice city. I’d like to see three at Barcelona.”

But after the teams moved on to Barcelona low temperatures and high tyre degradation remained an issue.

Jenson Button, McLaren, Circuit de Catalunya, 2013Jenson Button explained the problems McLaren had encountered during their test: “It’s very difficult, you’re doing qualifying runs to understand the car.”

“We all know that qualifying isn’t everything in Formula One so it’s very difficult. And also you have the complicated task of trying to understand what fuel load you should run.

“It’s very easy to go out of the pit lane with low fuel because you’ll go quick, it’ll look nice and the tyres will be great. But you’re not always going to be running low fuel on these tyres.

“So we have to do high fuel runs and we then have to do very high fuel runs. So sometimes you see laps stand out and I think it’s because people have just thought ‘there’s so much degradation, maybe if we take more fuel out we can get more laps out of it’. But you still lose the tyres very quickly. It doesn’t seem to matter what fuel you run.”

Button lost a chance for further running on the last day of the test due to rain. And the weather forecast for the final pre-season test this week offers little encouragement. Rain is expected on Thursday and Friday, with conditions improving for the final two days.

“It’s the same for all of us,” Button admitted. “Putting mileage on the car is very important, something we have to work on a little bit more before we get to the first race.”

When testing concludes at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday the first race of the season will be less than two weeks away. Time is running out and those who’ve made the best of the limited testing opportunity they’ve had may carry an advantage into the beginning of the season.

Cameron Donald Out of Honda TT Legends EWC Team

After announcing a “dream team” line-up for its 2013 season, Honda TT Legends has had to revise its rider-entry list, after coming to a mutual decision with Australian racer Cameron Donald, who will not not race with the Honda TT Legends World Endurance Championship squad this year. Citing personal reasons, namely the desire to spend more time with his family, Donald’s absence from the Honda TT Legends team means that the HRC-backed squad will field a ...

Husaberg Factory Racing Team awaits the start of 2013 Enduro World Championship

With new machinery, an expanded team featuring riders in each of the Enduro World Championship's classes, and with an Enduro 2 World title to defend, the Husaberg Factory Racing Team enters the 2013 season in confident mood. With five months having passed since the 2012 World Championship dew to a highly successful close for Husaberg, attentions and ambitions now turn to the start of the seven-round 2013 series.Securing a maiden EWC title last year to become the first rider ever to win an FIM Motocross and Enduro World Championship, Pela Renet starts 2013 as the rider to beat. In a class stacked with talent, one thing the tall Frenchman knows is that successfully defending his E2 title will be anything but easy. Not one to shy away from a challenge Pela starts 2013 having spent the winter dialling in his new FE450, and maximising his fitness levels."The goal for this season is the same as last year – to try and win the Enduro 2 title," comments Pela. "Last year was a great season, and I know that this year won't be easy at all. Some riders have left the E2 class, but others have joined it – there will be several riders capable of winning. Consistency will certainly be important. I've been working hard this winter, my fitness is very good, and I feel ready."I have a new bike for 2013, which is very different to last year's model. It is much lighter and easier to handle. I rode as much as I could this winter so I really know and understand the bike, and I am very pleased with it. I know I have a great package to start the defence of my Enduro 2 World Championship."Competing alongside Renet for Husaberg in Enduro 2 will be Oriol Mena. Stepping off an E3 class bike for the first time since entering the senior ranks, Mena will compete aboard an FE350 – an experience the Spaniard is eagerly awaiting."I'm really enjoying being on the 350. It's such an easy bike to ride and after five years with bigger bikes in the E3 class I'm really enjoying a new challenge," explained Oriol. "I've been training hard with the bike all winter and won the Spanish cross-country title. I've not felt as good as I do now since I won the Enduro Junior title back in 2009."The team's Enduro 1 class entrant is Thomas Oldrati. Making the switch to Husaberg bike at the end of 2012, the Italian has already showed what he's capable of with numerous senior class podium results since topping the Enduro Junior World Championship in 2008. Focused on battling for the E1 title, Oldrati knows he will face stiff competition from defending class champion Antoine Meo and eight-time world champion Juha Salminen but is confident of delivering a successful season."I'm really looking forward to this season. Getting to race on a Husaberg at the end of last year means I know the bike well, and everything is going very good. Competition for the podium will be tough, but it looks like this year we will have many dry races, which is good for me."The Enduro 3 class will see two riders take up the challenge for Husaberg – experienced 'big bike' campaigner Joakim Ljunggren and class newcomer Mathias Bellino. For Joakim 2013 arguably presents his biggest challenge ever as a professional enduro racer. Third in E3 in 2011, runner-up in 2013, the tall Swede would love to continue his rise up the ranks but knows that competition for the top spot will be fierce. Nevertheless Joakim's goal is to challenge for regular podium results and continue to chase a senior EWC title."It's so competitive at the top of all classes, but this year I want to close the gap to last year's E3 winner Christophe Nambotin and push hard to get the best results possible. Finishing as runner-up in the Enduro 3 World Championship last year was great but I want to be faster. I'm racing in the same class on the same bike – the TE300, which I really love to race. I will continue to race the Spanish Enduro Championship and have had a good winter's training. I'm really looking forward to the year ahead."For Bellino – Husaberg's 2012 Enduro Junior World Champion – the coming season is one filled with challenges. As well as adapting to a larger capacity bike and taking up the challenge of competing against new rivals, Mathias must first overcome wrist surgery and a notable lack of time on a bike."Last year was amazing with some great results – winning the Enduro Junior title was fantastic. The only disappointing thing was the injury to my left wrist. It started in Finland and after the final race in France I had some tests and we found I had a broken ligament. The frustrating thing is that I didn't crash."I had an operation at the end of November, followed by one-and-a-half months with a cast. I still have to be patient. Racing with the big bike is a new challenge for me, which I'm looking forward to. I like strong power. Until my fitness is back to 100 per cent I won't be at my top level, but this year I will have to take things step-by-step. I hope to be at my best during the second half of the season."New to the team for 2013 is former French national and Grand Prix motocross racer Loic Larrieu. Taking up the challenge of the EWC aboard an FE350, the 22-year-old from Montpellier in the South of France will race in the Enduro Junior class. Following in the footsteps of team-mate Pela Renet and the many other French motocross riders who have made the switch to enduro, despite his lack of experience Loic is determined to enjoy his debut season and learn all he can about his new chosen discipline."This is my first year in enduro, before this I raced in the French and World Motocross Championship. I raced in MX2 with one season in MX1 – I raced the European championship in 2008 and then spent three years in the GPs. My best result was finishing on the podium at the French GP in 2009, in the MX2 class. I have only done one enduro race, so the GP of Chile will be a very steep learning curve."Alongside Loic in the Enduro Junior class will be Spain's Mario Roman. Putting an injury hit 2012 season behind him the talented youngster will set about rebuilding both his confidence and speed. In the 125cc Youth Cup Manx youngster Jamie McCanney will return to the EWC trail having endured an injury plagued 2012 season. Close to winning on his EWC debut ride in Chile 12 months ago, Jamie has shown he has the speed to win but will need time in order to return to full fitness following shoulder surgery. In the Enduro Women class Husaberg will support British racer Jane Daniels. Getting her first taste of EWC competition at last year's GP of Italy, where she placed third on day one, Jane hopes to regularly challenge to top three results throughout the season.Communication Husaberg Racing - www.husaberg.com -

Pedrosa fastest and Marquez third as rain stops play early in Sepang

After leading all three days in the first Sepang Test two weeks ago, Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa maintained his position at the top of the time sheets and Marc Marquez continued his good performance as the second Sepang Test got underway today.Pedrosa and teammate Márquez both went out on track around 10.30am but heavy rain in the past few days had left the track quite dirty and slippery, which was reflected in the early lap times —almost two seconds slower than the first test.Dani spent the morning working on suspension and with engine mapping, especially in corner entry. He recorded the fastest lap of the day on lap 17 of 43, with a time of 2'01.580. Marc, once again happy to find his confidence with the bike from the beginning, spent the morning trying some different settings but was limited due to the track conditions, he took his fastest lap of 2'01.942 on lap 17 of 23 placing him 3rd for the day. He had a small crash in turn nine, but at such a slow speed he was able to pick up the bike and ride back to the garage unaffected.Unfortunately heavy rainfall arrived again at 14h30 local time which ended the track action on this first day. Testing resumes tomorrow at 09h00 local time.Dani Pedrosa2:01.580, 43 laps, 238 km."Today we continued trying things out with the bike here in Sepang, focusing most of all on suspension. We also worked a little on the electronics. The track wasn't 100% after the rainfall from the past few days, but we were able to ride well. In the afternoon it rained again, and we used this to perform some laps in the wet. Tomorrow we will continue with the work that we have scheduled."    Marc Márquez2:01.942, 23 laps, 128 km."Today went pretty well. It's just a shame that the track was so slippery, because we weren't able to collect all the data that we wanted due to the times not being so fast. We were not able to ride a lot in the afternoon either, because as soon as we got on the pace it started to rain and we aborted the session. We hope that the surface is better tomorrow, with more grip and less rain. Our aim is to be able to put in laps, gain experience and test out a lot of things that we have pending."Communication Repsol Media -www.repsolmedia.com -

Trial 'Non Stop' Demo

With the aim of making Trial more accessible, the FIM has drawn up new rules to speed up the sport and create more dynamic performances. The purpose of this video is to help all those involved – including the fans – to understand the philosophy behind the new regulations and clarify a number of situations that can arise when the riders negotiate the various sections. Trial is a motor sport that focuses on keeping one's balance while moving forward! A rider has to negotiate an obstacle or decide on a technique while constantly moving forward; otherwise, the attempt will count as a failure, penalised with 5 points. There is no longer any time allowance in the sections. These new techniques allow a large number of manoeuvres that are both accessible and varied. From 2013, the FIM Trial World Championships will be "non-stop" in all categories of the discipline (World Pro, Open International, Junior, 125cc, Women & Trial des Nations).Take a look at this video showing a few situations that illustrate some of the different ways that the rider and his machine can move forward.Watch the video!

2013 Phillip Island World Superbike Superpole Results

This year, only 15 riders qualify for Superpole with three eliminated after the first of the three sessions. This is due to the switch to MotoGP-like three bike wide grids. There are three twelve minute sessions with three riders eliminated after each of the sessions with the last session determining the grid positions for the first three rows. As it was last year, each rider gets two Pirelli qualifying tyres to use across the three sessions.
