Perez Not Bringing Money To McLaren, Says Manager Fernandez (Speed)

Adrian Fernandez (Sergio Perez’s manager): “Sergio is an unbelievable driver and he has earned his place at McLaren. He is not bringing money to the team. He has been hired to race. His performances earned him this position, and that made my job easier because people were interested in him.”

Hamilton has full faith in brains of Brawn (The Telegraph)

Ross Brawn: “The changes we have made in the last two years will be measured in 2013. Geoff Willis, Aldo Costa, Mike Elliott, our new head of aero. I’m very excited about Mike. He’s a really strong guy. That has to show through in 2013 and I am pretty optimistic and confident that it will.”

Hamilton ‘sparked’ Mercedes move (BBC)

Martin Brundle: “Last weekend I got the firm impression from McLaren that they thought they were going to keep Lewis. I believe this deal happened two days ago, when he finally made the jump to the new team.”

“Lewis’s management expressed interest, wanted to know what our plans were and it grew from there.”

Mercedes move is Lewis Hamilton’s bid to strike out on his own (The Guardian)

John Watson: “Because he came in so young he doesn’t know anything differently. Jenson is a more rounded personality and character by virtue of life experiences. Lewis’s life experiences are very much contained within the strictures of McLaren.”

Comment of the day

There were lots of good suggestions for yesterday’s Caption Competition – I particularly liked those from James Brickles, Sozavele, Icemangrins, Timtoo and Hairs.

But my favourite was this one from Boris (@Bozdee):

Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 2012

Hamilton: “Jenson, you reckon Mercedes are going to have a championship-winning car next season?”

On this day in F1

Five years ago today F1 returned to Fuji for the first time in three decades. The Japanese Grand Prix was held in foul conditions, the drivers circulating behind the safety car for a preposterous 18 laps at the start.

When the race finally began Lewis Hamilton mastered the appalling conditions to take a brilliant win. Team mate Fernando Alonso crashed out and fell 12 points behind Hamilton in the championship with two races to go.

Ferrari took themselves out of contention by starting their drivers on intermediate tyres, but Kimi Raikkonen recovered to an excellent third, while Heikki Kovalainen impressed by keeping his fellow Finn at bay for second place.

Mark Webber was taken out of the race while running second when future Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel, then driving for Toro Rosso, crashed into him.

MotoGP: Riders Give Mixed Reactions to Spec-ECU News

With the MotoGP paddock assembled at the Motorland Aragon circuit, the press got their first chance to gauge rider reaction to the proposal of a spec ECU which Dorna is looking to introduce into MotoGP, most probably from 2014. The reaction was guardedly positive among the MotoGP regulars, though all five riders questioned in the pre-event press conference raised concerns over safety. Only Jonathan Rea, standing in for Casey Stoner in the Repsol Honda team ...

Lorenzo Delivers with Pole in Aragon

Jorge Lorenzo Aragon 2012

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo emerged the victor in an intense qualifying battle today, securing the pole position for tomorrow’s Grand Prix of Aragon at the Motorland circuit. The Championship leader started the first dry session of the weekend quite slowly, gradually picking up the pace to join the battle between his team mate Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow and Dani Pedrosa for the top spot. It was with his last fresh tyre just three laps from the end of the session that Lorenzo delivered, putting down a 1’49.404 lap to secure pole 0.088 seconds ahead of Pedrosa. The pole is his fifth of the season.

Texan Spies threatened to make it an all Yamaha front row this afternoon, consistently battling with the top three and briefly taking the top spot on the timesheets. His fastest lap came just one lap before the end of the session, delivering a 1’49.748 lap and missing the front row by just 0.172 seconds.

Jorge Lorenzo
“I feel happy, I really thought Cal would take pole position because his lap time was really quick but finally we managed to improve our lap time with the last qualifying tyre. It’s important to be on the front row in pole position but tomorrow is what counts, we have to do a lot of laps and it’s going to be a long race. Let’s see how the weather is, we all hope it’s not going to rain, it’s much better if it’s dry.”

Ben Spies
“In the end we weren’t too far off the fastest guys. The session was quite tricky in the beginning, very slippery in parts and quite different to when we tested here. In the end we did an ok job, we didn’t make a perfect qualifying session but honestly speaking after seeing some of the crashes I was probably being a bit cautious. It was the first dry session of the weekend so it’s quite hard to go full speed that quickly. The bike is working well so a good warm up tomorrow morning and we’ll be ready for the race.”

Maiden pole for Folger

The Moto3™ grid was greeted by a continually drying track for qualifying at the Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón where it was Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3's Jonas Folger who stormed to his maiden GP pole position ahead of Luis Salom and Sandro Cortese. Under threatening skies but a track that was almost fully dry by the end of the session it was Folger's time of 2.01'715 that saw him take his first ever Grand Prix pole position, with RW Racing GP's injured Salom less than two tenths behind him in second. There had been concerns that Salom may not be able to contest qualifying after a crash this morning, yet he was declared fit despite a very sore shoulder. Red Bull KTM Ajo's Sandro Cortese completes the front row in third, as the German was unable to match his compatriots pace in the final stages. Team Italia FMI's Romano Fenati heads the second row in fourth, having had a terrific session at the Spanish track, ending the afternoon just under five-tenths off the top. Lining up next to him in fifth is Cortese's teammate Danny Kent, whilst the final spot on the row belongs to Blusens Avintia's championship pursuer Maverick Viñales. Viñales had been lingering further back in the field when the track was damp at the start, yet soon made his way up once conditions improved. In seventh, AirAsia-SIC-Ajo's Zulfahmi Khairuddin was unable to repeat his top spot from this morning, but will no doubt be pleased with his performance. Next to him in eighth, JHK t-shirt Laglisse's Efrén Vázquez looked as if he might make it onto the second row in the latter stages, yet was unable to match the pace in the final laps. Yesterday's pace-setter, Estrella Galicia 0,0's Miguel Oliveira completes the third row, with his teammate Alex Rins rounding out the top ten.

Forcefield Race-Lite Vest

It is often said that the best protection comes from the gear that you will actually wear. Forcefield is a brand that excels at producing armor which is not only easy to wear, but also extremely effective. Already well known for award winning race back protectors like the Pro Sub 4, Forcefield has combined their CE level 2 protection with a lightweight, technical fleece vest to create the ultimate in everyday armor - the Race-Lite Vest.

This Race-Lite vest is easily one of the most comfortable pieces of protective gear that we have tried at Riders Discount. It’s so light and flexible that it is easy to forget that you are even wearing it. The vest itself is made of a technical fleece that is very soft and breathable. It features a full front zip that works in conjunction with the adjustable waist strap to hold the back protector right where it needs to be in order to provide the most coverage. A grippy, elastic strip also runs around the bottom to prevent the vest from sliding up as you move.

The back protector in the Race-Lite vest carries the same CE Level 2 certification as their top of the line Pro Sub 4, only it is thinner and even more flexible. 3D moulding and multiple layers of flexible, energy absorbing materials allow the protector to not only conform to the body’s natural shape, but to also take multiple impacts. This ability to take repeated hits is another major factor that helps set Forcefield apart from the hard-shelled competition.

Forcefield products are not yet listed on our website, so if you’re interested in the Race-Lite vest, or any of their other protectors, you can get in touch with Brad and he’ll be happy to assist you. Feel free to give him a call at 866.931.6644 ext. 810, or send him a PM through the forum. If email is more convenient, you can send one to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

The low profile back protector is lightweight and flexible enough to conform to your body. It is also removable so that you can wash the vest.

It’s amazing that such a small amount of the Forcefield material can absorb the amount of energy necessary to be CE level 2 certified..

An elastic band with rubber grip pads helps keep the vest from sliding up on you.

Crutchlow satisfied with wet pace potential

Cal Crutchlow will be unperturbed if Friday's wet weather continues at Aragon for tomorrow's qualifying.

The British star ended this afternoon's wet session seventh fastest overall on his Tech 3 Yamaha, but Crutchlow feels an issue with the steering damper on his YZR-M1 prevented him from finishing higher up the order.

And the 26-year-old is confident a front row start is within his reach tomorrow, regardless of the conditions at the Spanish circuit.

Crutchlow, whose best lap of 2m 01.665s was 1.446s behind Ben Spies on the factory Yamaha, said: “I am pleased with my pace in the full wet conditions as I was right near the top and confident I could have finished inside the top three.

“I had a small problem with the steering damper right at the end and without that I am sure I would have been much higher than seventh.

“We have to take another step tomorrow if the conditions are the same but I am confident I can be very competitive in the wet,” added the 26-year-old, who completed 15 laps in FP2 after skipping the morning session, which was blighted by mixed conditions.

“The set-up of the bike is good and with some improvements if we have more rain tomorrow, I'll be looking to be back on the front row again,” he added.

“I hope the rest of the weekend though is dry and the fans can see a good race.”
