Ferrari has “run out of patience” with F1 rules | 2012 F1 season

Ferrari has “run out of patience” with F1 rules is an original article from F1 Fanatic. If this article has been published anywhere other than F1 Fanatic it is an infringement of copyright.

Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari, 2012Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo had strong words for Bernie Ecclestone following the Formula One Management boss’s recent criticism of the team.

“You have to show respect for your elders, especially when they get to that stage in which they are no longer in control of what they say,” said Montezemolo of Ecclestone. “However, old age is clearly incompatible with certain roles and responsibilities.”

Ecclestone criticised Ferrari for questioning whether Sebastian Vettel had illegally overtaken Jean-Eric Vergne during the Brazilian Grand Prix. The FIA told Ferrari the pass was legal and there was “no case to answer”.

Montezemolo, speaking at a press conference at the Ferrari World Finals in Valencia, said: “The FIA declared that for them there had been no infringement and so the matter was closed.

“Congratulations to Vettel and Red Bull because whoever won after such a difficult season deserved the title and because at Ferrari that is what we do. And we would like everyone to congratulate us next season if we win the world championship.”

Asked whether some of Vettel’s rivals make life too easy for him in the final race, Montezemolo said: “I was expecting a slightly different final race on the part of Michael Schumacher because he is a driver with links to Ferrari through some extraordinary moments and with whom we feel very close.

“As for the rest, I don’t want to make any comment other than to underline that in the past we have been strongly criticised for playing a sensible, necessary, right and open team game. I have always told my drivers that they are not racing for themselves but for Ferrari. Ours is one team, you can see that in the pit stops and you can see it on the track and one of the things I most appreciate about Felipe is the fact that he has always been a team player and I know that Fernando has been one too.

“We have had criticism for how we apply these team games but it’s up to the public and the spectators to judge these things. I don’t like to create controversy for its own sake: we look ahead and everyone makes their own judgement. The behaviour of Ferrari has always prized the team game and the sport.”

Montezemolo also repeated his earlier criticisms about F1′s rules: “There are things that aren’t going well in this sport and the moment has arrived to clarify these once and for all in the appropriate places.

“We can no longer have a situation in which the transfer of technology from the track to the street is reduced to the bare minimum, engines and gearboxes are always the same and the aerodynamics no longer has anything to do with research for road cars.

“Moreover, it cannot be that in this sport you can’t test. We’ve been saying this for a while and we will repeat it in the appropriate places so for the moment I don’t want to add anything else. But our patience has run out so someone needs to think about whether they want Formula One still to have companies that invest and consider it the most advanced research bench for its own cars – as Ferrari has always done since 1950.

“We are constructors, not sponsors. I’m no longer happy that we can’t do testing on tarmac and that you can’t give any chance for young drivers to emerge – since some people have used the expression ‘It’s a joke’ in recent days, I would like to say that this is the real ‘joke’.”

The 2012 Season Review - Part Two

You could make a strong case for the Sauber C31 being one of the cars of the year. It struggled in some temperatures and it liked the faster tracks, but it treated its tyres extremely well and it was usually extremely quick. That first became truly apparent in Malaysia, where Sergio Perez was catching Alonso hand over fist in the rain to the extent that it seemed only a matter of time before he would become the first Mexican since Pedro Rodriguez back in 1970 to win a Grand Prix. And his error there notwithstanding, his second place was a coming of age for him. It was also a sign that Peter Sauber's team - the running of which he handed over to Monisha Kaltenborn - really had something special on their hands

UPDATE: This bike is no longer available, though though the FTR Moto2 bike that Alex de Angelis used to win the Sepang round this year has just found its way back to the FTR shop. Trolling the internet for things I can’t afford, but which my credit card can, I think I may have discovered the perfect gift for the motorcyclist who has everything: a 2011 FTR M211 Moto2 race bike that has been upgraded with ...

Rumor: Race-Only 450cc BMW/Husqvarna Bike Coming?

Italy’s motorcycle publication of record, Motociclismo, is reporting that BMW Motorrad is developing a 450cc race bike for youth racers. Said to be a ground-up design that centers around a single-cylinder motor that will likely be prepared by Husqvarna, the BMW race bike would feature a frame built in Bologna, Italy with “racing” suspension, forged wheels, and carbon fiber bodywork. With pricing to be in the €20,000 range, BMW hopes that its 450cc cup bike ...

Young star set for WRC move

Story from www.wrc.com

Esapekka Lappi, who stunned WRC regulars by leading the Super 2000 world championship section of Neste Oil Rally Finland in the summer, has signed for Skoda Motorsport to pilot a Fabia S2000 in the new support category.
But while the 21-year-old Finn’s programme for 2013 remains unclear, Skoda Motorsport chief Michal Hrabanek has confirmed that the Czech make will begin preparing its future motorsport activities next summer with an R5-specification rally car projected mooted.
“Becoming part of a factory team is every driver’s dream,” said Lappi, who will continue to be co-driven by Janne Ferm. “The Skoda Fabia Super 2000 is the best car in its category. Janne and I appreciate this opportunity a great deal and we will do our best to be very useful members of the factory team.”
Hrabanek added: “We have a new factory crew and we obviously have fairly high expectations about their results.”
Meanwhile, Lappi and Ferm’s arrival at Skoda has signalled the departure of Juho Hanninen and Mikko Markkula from the squad following a four-year stint. Hanninen and Markkula won the SWRC title with Skoda in 2011.

Looking for his fifth win in 2013, the KTM rider has stiff competition, namely in the form of his teammate Marc Coma, who has won Dakar three times in his career. Separated by only ...

Decision time for ace Evans

Story from www.wrc.com

The ace Briton will shortly be required to choose his preferred prize drive for next season but also needs to recruit a co-driver having worked with three different navigators during his title-winning campaign.
Evans’ prize for capturing the young driver-training category crown is a choice of five WRC rounds in a Super 2000-specification Ford Fiesta or a full programme in a Fiesta R2.
The 23-year-old said: “I’m still not sure what format my prize for 2013 will take. It could be 13 WRC events in a Ford Fiesta R2 or five events in the Super 2000 equivalent. I’d like to do as many WRC events as possible, but I’d also like to get more four-wheel-drive experience so we’ll have to wait and see.”
Evans was co-driven by Andrew Edwards, Phil Pugh and Seb Marshall in 2012. He now needs to select his partner for next term.
“I changed co-driver to Phil for Greece and that worked out fantastically well,” said Evans. “We won four out of four rounds together. He brought a lot of good experience and really got involved. I would have loved to have kept working with him, but he couldn’t commit to the future for both personal and work reasons. I sat with a new co-driver for Spain with a view to next year and beyond, but as yet I haven’t confirmed who’ll be my navigator next season.”
Whatever the choices he makes for 2013, Evans says he has learned plenty during his stint in the WRC Academy, which will be renamed the Junior WRC Championship for next year when M-Sport-prepared Fiesta R2s will continue to be used as standard.
“I’d only done three WRC events before this season and only two of those [Finland and France] were on this year’s WRC Academy calendar,” Evans explained. “To experience WRC rallies is a massive learning curve. The WRC Academy was an affordable way to gain this experience in a competitive field.”
