Martin snatches @RedBull #MotoGP Rookies opener win in #Jerez

Jorge Martin of Spain won a two rider battle for the win in Rd. 3 of the Red Bull MotoGP Cup at home in Spain on Saturday when he snatched victory in the final corner from pole sitter Karel Hanika of the Czech Republic.

The 15-year old Spaniard out braked Hanika and race leadin , Jorge Martin stole victory from Karel Hanika going into the final corner and the Czech rider had no response as they charged the finish line on the Spanish circuit at the end of their 16-lap race.

Italian Enea Bastianini took third place after trailing the two leaders for the second half of the race while there was a fierce battle for fourth place between a pack of six riders some distance from the leaders. Spain’s Diego Perez was the winner of this fight followed by Italian Stefano Manzi, Toprak Razgatlıoğlu of Turkey, American Joe Roberts and British rider Bradley Ray.

The first three all started on the front line after being fastest in the field in qualifying and looked unassailable throughout even though in typical for this small class, they were heavily pursued in the opening stages. The melee resulted in a number of crashes with Australian Olly Simpson crashing hard at the start. He was taken to hospital with suspected arm injuries. Four other riders of the 23 starters also crashed but they were not hurt.

Hanika and Martin, who fought the main fight during most of the race, including one coming together, continually put in faster lap times, surpassing the lap record at the Spanish circuit.

Karel Hanika” “It was a fantastic race. I made that mistake and we touched. Otherwise I was comfortable doing most of the leading. Actually I didn't watch what was happening behind me over the last laps I didn't want to be distracted, I just rode my own race. Congratulations to Jorge on winning, there is still tomorrow's race and I want it to be at least as good.” Hanika who had a 2-1 result in Austin Texas leads the championship.

It was Martin’s first podium in the Rookies Cup: “I was riding with Karel and over the last few laps, I knew I could pass him but I was rolling off the throttle and just waiting. I only wanted to pass him at the last corner... and it worked.” It was a also a very good result for newcomer Bastianini was naturally happy to be on the podium so early in his first Rookies Cup season.

Riders, who are all on KTM 250 4-stroke machines contest Round Four on Sunday in Jerez.
