Jorge Lorenzo + Gangnam Style = Us Crying

At Phillip Island post-race press conference, I thought Jorge Lorenzo singing “We Are the Champions” with Wilco Zeelenberg would top my MotoGP audio/visual experience for the year (I’m still debating whether it is worth losing my MotoGP credentials to post-up that video). However, I think this clip of the newly crowned World Champion doing a rendition of PSY’s “Gangnam Style” might just even surpass that special moment in my life. Just a warning, some things...

De Puniet out to harry factory bikes

Share

Randy de Puniet has pledged to try and put the factory MotoGP prototypes under as much pressure as he can after taking the best grid position for a CRT bike yet in Phillip Island qualifying. De Puniet will start ninth in the Australian Grand Prix on his Aspar Aprilia – the first time that CRT machine has made it into the top 10 in qualifying. Having been an extraordinary seventh overall in final practice, de Puniet managed to beat three of the four MotoGP Ducatis in qualifying

Karel Abraham on 4th row in Australia hope to make good race

Karel Abraham Phillip Island Qualifing 2012

Czech MotoGP rider Karel Abraham finished eleventh in today´s qualifying practice to Grand Prix of Australia and will start from 4th row to the race. Karel did his best lap time 1:31,910 in lap 20 with 2,287 seconds gap to the fastest Casey Stoner.

Karel Abraham
“It´s pity that it started rain in the end of session, when I was riding in strong group and can improve my lap time. The most positive is that I was able to make more laps similar to the best one. Also the bike is prepared well, we still have some problems with grip on rear tyre and our mechanicians must decide, if it´s necessary to make another setup changes.”

Marco Grana, chef mechanic Cardion AB Motoracing
“After qualifying we can be optimistic, because we know that we can improve more. We didn´t make perfect lap today and I´m sure that Karel can be faster. We are really fast in the first sector, but we can be better in sector 2. We had bad luck in the end of qualifying practice, because it started to rain when Karel was riding with Valentino and Alvaro and in this group he was able to improve his time. I´m sure that he could reach 1:31,6 and finished on eighth place. It should be sunshine tomorrow and I hope we will do good race.“

250cc Yamaha Sport Bike in the Works

News coming out of India and Southeast Asia (which Cycle World is bizarrely taking credit for starting, despite being months late to the party), is that Yamaha is set to debut a 250cc sport bike for the world market. Said to be visually similar to the Yamaha YZF-R6 (concept sketch above), the quarter-liter four-stroke machine is certainly a response to the recent offerings from Honda and Kawasaki. Expected to be a 2013 or 2014 model, we ...

Sordo: give me one more year to shine

Story from www.wrc.com

The Spaniard, currently gearing up for his home round of the WRC in Salou next month, has only been a bit-part player in the global series since leaving Citroen at the end of 2010.
With his future currently unclear, Sordo told Spanish media recently that a return to Citroen in 2013 would suit him just fine, particularly with long-term nemesis Sebastien Loeb only planning to contest a handful of events.
“I’m not pushing for the two-year contract,” said Sordo, whose 32 podium finishes in the WRC have yet to include a victory. “I would like to do one more year and do it properly with all the rallies. If I can do this one more season and see where I am, to see where my level is against everybody else, then I can go home after this. I never won against Sebastien, but nobody really won against him.”
Sordo will tackle RallyRACC-Rally de Espana in a Prodrive WRC Team-entered MINI John Cooper Works WRC. Citroen has yet to announce who will partner Mikko Hirvonen on a full-time basis next season.

Trackside Tuesday: There’s No Place Like Home

This past weekend at Phillip Island was a memorable experience in two distinct but related ways. It was my first visit to this famous track, and I arrived with high expectations, but figured I’d be at least a little disappointed. For all the hyperbole heaped on Phillip Island’s GP course, how could it be that great? But as I explored the track, which immediately reminded me of one of my favorite courses in the world, Donington Park, ...

Brembo T-Drive Brake Rotors

If you tally up all the bikes and riders in MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, WSBK and WSS, you’ll find that nearly 90% of them are running braking systems from Brembo. This is a massive testbed for the development of new technologies, and this is exactly where their newest rotors came to be. These rotors, called T-Drive, use a unique, patent-pending type of interface to connect the disc and the carrier. Gone are the circular button type connectors normally seen on floating rotors. In their place, Brembo used a set of eight “T” shaped pins on the disc side that couple with the carrier through a guillotine type connection.

The new T-Drive interface that gives the rotors their name was developed and tested at the highest levels of competition, where rotors are subjected to very extreme levels of thermal and mechanical stress. When completed, the new design showed improved resistances to both of these forces while also allowing for a more efficient transfer of brake torque from disc to wheel. Improvements to durability and performance can often come at the expense of a higher weight, but that is not the case here. Brembo managed to make these improvements while also saving a significant amount of weight. This reduction in unsprung weight, plus the more efficient performance add up to enhanced rideability for your bike and more confidence for you.

If you’re interested in more information about the Brembo T-Drive rotors, feel free to get in touch with Brad by calling 866.931.6644 ext. 810, or by sending a message through this forum. If email is more convenient, you can send one to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

Brembo T-Drive rotors feature the same steel used in SBK and MotoGP discs. The carrier has a black anodized finish.

A closer look at the T-Drive interface between the disc and carrier.

Here's a sneak peak at what we'll be pairing up with a set of Brembo T-Drive rotors on our Triumph Daytona 675 project bike. (Hint: There are 7 magnesium spokes sandwiched between these rotors.)

Smith and Simeon collect valuable points in Australia

Bradley Smith Phillip Island 2012

The Tech 3 Racing Team ended a gruelling three-week world tour on a positive note after Bradley Smith and Xavier Simeon claimed hard fought top 15 finishes in sunny but cool conditions in the AirAsia Australian Moto2 Grand Prix this afternoon.

Smith kept himself firmly in the hunt for a top six finish in the final World Championship rankings after he guided his Mistral 610 machine to a determined 12th place at the jaw-dropping Phillip Island track.

In front a packed crowd of over 53,000 fans, the 21-year-old was engaged in an exciting figh t with Jordi Torres that went right down to the wire, the Spaniard fending off Smith's relentless offensive to secure 11th by just 0.045s.

Smith now heads to the final round of the 2012 campaign at the Valencia track in Spain still in with a shout of sixth place in the final Championship standings, with the gap to Mika Kallio in sixth reduced to 11-points.

Simeon delivered an equally determined ride to secure his sixth top 15 finish of the season. The Belgian rider slowly built up his confidence after a tumble in this morning's warm-up session and once he found a confident rhythm he was able to keep the battle between Smith and Torres right in his sights.

With top 15 finishes in two out of the last three races, Simeon is now looking forward to ending his time with the Tech 3 Racing Team with a strong performance in the season's final race in Valencia.

Bradley Smith 12th – 108 points:
“That was a tough race and really hard work to finish in the points today. We have experimented with the set-up of the bike a lot all weekend and while we never really got it to where I was completely comfortable and confident, the bike felt good in the race and the Tech 3 Racing Team did another great job. The main issue was a lack of rear grip and that was our problem all weekend. We've got plenty of data to analyse and work on improving in that area for the last race in Valencia, where I'm determined to finish my time in Moto2 with a strong result. With Kallio not finishing as well I still have a chance to finish sixth in the championship. It will be difficult but it definitely gives us a bit more motivation to take into the last race.&rd quo;

Xavier Simeon 14th – 21 points:
“I made a very good start and I recovered some places but this morning's crash at Turn 10 meant I lost some confidence and I wasn't very strong in that part of the track. I lost a few places and I didn't have the best feeling with the front tyre, so it was difficult to push harder with any confidence. I didn't want to make a mistake and I could easily stay in the group so at one stage I was thinking I might be able to fight with Bradley and Torres. But with about six laps to go I encountered a chatter issue with the front tyre and I had to slow down quite a bit and lost my rhythm. It is a shame because I was looking forward to battling with Bradley and Torres right to the end of the race. At least I scored more points and I'm looking forward to the last round in Valencia to finish with a positive result for the Tech 3 Racing Team.”

Herve Poncharal – Team Manager:
“It wasn't an easy weekend for the Tech 3 Racing Team, so to head home with both Bradley and Xavier inside the points is a satisfying way to end this long spell in the Championship. The Moto2 grid didn't have the best weather conditions all weekend, so I think we prepared the best we could and Bradley and Xavier got the maximum potential out of the Mistral 610 machine. Bradley's pace in the second half of the race was fast and constant and I think he would have been in the group battling for fourth if he had a little bit more confidence in the beginning. Xavier had a crash this morning that dented his confidence a little bit but he recovered well and it was a pity he wasn't closer to the fight with Bradley and Torres to try and get a few more points. Both of them rode with a lot of determination and they never gave up, so we can go to the final race in Valencia hoping they will be inside the points again, but hopefully much higher up the rankings.”

AGV K3 Rossi Icon & 46 Replica Helmets

AGV has expanded their extremely popular line of Valentino Rossi replica graphics for their extremely affordable K3 helmet by releasing two brand new models - the 46 and the Icon.

The K3 Rossi Icon sports graphics that were used by Valentino when he won the Mugello Grand Prix aboard the legendary, 990 cc V5 powered Honda RC211V in 2002. The graphics were modeled after his father’s helmet design and feature an Italian flag motif. Additional details include his signature on the front left side, a number of small icons running around the base of the helmet that represent different aspects of Rossi’s life.

The design found on the K3 46 is based on the 2003 variant of Rossi’s famous Sun and Moon theme. AGV chose to alter the original by dropping a lot of the yellow background and leaving the bright colors on a gloss black backdrop. While some die-hard Rossi fans may consider it sacrilege to modify a classic design, we think it turned out very well.

If you’re interested in these, or any other AGV helmets, feel free to get in touch with Brad. He can be reached by phone at 866.931.6644 ext. 817, or you can send him a PM through this forum. If email is more convenient, go ahead and send one to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

Saturday Summary at Phillip Island: Of Unstoppable Stoner, Honda’s Magic Gearbox, & A Dark Horse

Two championships could be settled at Phillip Island on Sunday. Marc Marquez looks certain to wrap up the 2012 Moto2 title in Australia, as the Catalunya Caixa rider needs just 2 points to put the title out of reach of Pol Espargaro. Marquez’ chances of wrapping up the Moto2 title with a win look slim, though. Pol Espargaro has been in a class of his own at Phillip Island, his love for the circuit showing ...

Stefan Bradl Takes 6th Place After a Thrilling Battle at the Island GP

Stefan Bradl Phillip Island race 2012

Fast and flowing Phillip Island track was sunny and packed today for the last local hero Casey Stoner’s home GP who confirmed his dominance winning the 27lap race whilst the LCR Honda’s racer Stefan Bradl was again a strong performer finishing 6th.

In his first visit to the ocean circuit on a MotoGP machine, the German had vastly improved from Friday’s practices gaining more confidence aboard his RC213V and starting a close battle with Dovizioso and Bautista for the 4th place till the last corner. Now Bradl is holding the 8th place in the world standing with 135 points.

Stefan Bradl:
“Off course we are all happy because we did not expect such a close fight for the 4th place today after the difficult first day of practices we had here. It’s a shame that we lost the 4th place because I was on hard tyre today and had a small advantage on my competitors so I thought I could take it. But the other guys had other advantages on me so we were plus or minus on the same level but in the last lap I was stopped by Bautista and Dovi passed me. I am not the one who usually lost the battle but I am quite happy anyway because we showed our pace once again and want to thank the Team for their excellent job this weekend”

Crutchlow grabs early birthday present with Phillip Island podium

Cal Crutchlow Phillip Island Race 2012

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider Cal Crutchlow gave himself the perfect early birthday present when he scorched to a stunning podium finish in this afternoon's AirAsia Australian Grand Prix.

The British rider turns 27 tomorrow (Monday) and he kicked off the celebrations early after a fantastic ride to third position in front of a record crowd of 53,100 fans packed into the spectacular Phillip Island track.

After Dani Pedrosa's early crash out of the lead on the second lap, Crutchlow brilliantly kept Monster Yam aha Tech 3 teammate Andrea Dovizioso, Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl at bay in an exciting early battle for third place.

Eight laps had been completed when Crutchlow commenced a devastating attack that saw him comfortably streak away from the chasing trio. At the end of lap eight he pulled a 1.050s advantage over Dovizioso, but just four laps later his red-hot pace had seen him establish a gap of more than 3.5s.

Crutchlow was still feeling below 100% after being struck down by a nasty bout of bronchitis earlier in the weekend, but he was able to maintain a fast and consistent pace in sunny but cool conditions to bring his YZR-M1 machine in a richly deserved third position.

It was Crutchlow's second rostrum finish off a fantastic second season in MotoGP and today's result means he still has an o utside chance of claiming a top five finish in the overall World Championship standings with one round remaining.

With Crutchlow riding off into the distance in third, it was left to Dovizioso to provide the most entertaining battle of the 27-lap race. His pulsating fight with Bautista and Bradl went right down to the wire, with Dovizioso starting the final lap at the tail of the group in sixth.

The Italian's race craft and experience came to the fore though and in the decisive final moments he was able to pass both Bradl and Bautista to finish fourth. It was the 15th time in 17 races that Dovizioso has finished inside the top five and he heads to the final round in Valencia optimistic that he can end the season with a strong finish.

Cal Crutchlow 3rd – 151 points:
“I am really happy with this result because it is a great way to finish this period of three races in a row. After the disappointment of running out of fuel while battling for the podium on the last lap in Japan and then crashing in Sepang, I really needed a positive result here and that's what we've got. Considering how ill I've felt with the fever and bronchitis, to be back on the podium is a fantastic feeling and we definitely deserved it. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team gave me a great bike all weekend and I was very confident and calm when in front of Andrea, Bautista and Bradl. I knew I could go faster and pull away and once I opened up a comfortable gap, I just stayed relaxed and consistent because I wasn't going to catch Jorge. Another podium is a great result and we've backed up the third in Brno. It's great too because it is my birthday tomorrow and this is a good way to kick off the celebrations. It was a big thrill to be on the podium here with Casey winning. The fans gave him a great reception and I'm glad I could be part of it. I want to say big congratulations to Yamaha and Jorge too for winning the World Championship. They have done an amazing job and they both deserve this success.”

Andrea Dovizioso 4th – 208 points:
“I knew that it was going to be a tough race because I didn't had the same pace as Cal. All I could do was to try during the first laps to get in front of him or to put him under pressure but it was not possible. He was riding very well so I decided the best strategy was not to take too many risks. The battle with Bradl and Bautista was really exciting and I had a lot of fun. I'm sure the fans appreciated it as well because we were pushing and changing places for the whole race. I am satisfied to fi nish in front of the group and it was a strong battle right to the chequered flag. My next race in Valencia is the last for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team, so I go there with high motivation and determination to get a strong result to end our successful relationship in a positive way.”

Super Randy Qualifies Ninth at Phillip Island

Randy De Puniet Phillip Island Qualifying 2012

POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar rider Randy de Puniet took the challenge to the prototypes at Phillip Island today, qualifying ahead of three of them and just 0.006 shy of another with a sensational lap of 1'31.667 on his ART machine. The Frenchman was easily the fastest CRT bike around the Australian track, impressing the crowd almost as much as local hero Casey Stoner, who delighted them with pole position after a dominant weekend so far. Tomorrow's race promises to go Australia's way too although the world's eyes will also be on the battle between Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, with Lorenzo looking to wrap up the World Championship title by finishing ahead of his Spanish compatriot.

De Puniet gave a warning of his stunning potential around this track with the seventh fastest lap of the final free practice this morning and he followed up with another lap seemingly beyond his means to seal a third row start against all the odds. Just three tenths and three grid places behind him is his team-mate Aleix Espargaró, who didn't make as strong a start to the weekend as Randy yesterday but has gradually upped his game today and establish himself as a threat to the Frenchman's CRT victory ambitions tomorrow.

9th Randy De Puniet 1.31.667 (23 vueltas): “I am really happy with the way things are going this weekend. We have been fast from the start and my feeling with the bike is great here. I am really enjoying myself and I hope this continues tomorrow through to the end of the race. We start from the third row, which is a great achievement for a CRT bike, having been seventh fastest this morning. I think we could have gone even faster in qualifying this afternoon but the conditions changed at the end of the session. Anyway I feel comfortable and confident. The objective is to hang on to the prototypes in the race and see what happens. I need to pull as many points back as possible on my team-mate but it will be tough because he is looking strong here too. Today was a great day; hopefully tomorrow is another one.”

12th Aleix Espargaró 1.31.990 (22 laps): “I am pleased with our performance today because we have improved a lot from yesterday. We were a long way off in the first couple of sessions in terms of lap times and feeling but the situation has been turned around by a lot of hard work. The bike feels how I want it to feel now and that is important, as is the fact that we set a consistent pace riding alone and using my own reference points. We didn't set a single lap as good as my team-mate but our main weapon tomorrow is our consistency. We have worked with the gearbox, the engine and the chassis here and pretty much everything we tried was positive.”

Márquez - FIM 2012 Moto2™ World Champion

At this weekend's AirAsia Australian Grand Prix, Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol's Marc Márquez became the fifth Spanish rider ever to win a world title in the intermediate-class, and being the first ever to do so on a Suter chassis.Marc Márquez's debut World Championship campaign in 2008 immediately served notice of his talent, and he took a podium at Donington in his first season despite a shortened campaign due to injury. In 2009 he scored a single podium on his way to eighth overall, before his full talent truly blossomed in 2010 as he scored an incredible 10 victories from 12 poles on his way to the 125cc World Championship title. One of his most notable rides was the fight-back from last on the grid in Estoril to storm to victory.Stepping up to Moto2 in 2011 the youngster got off to a rocky start, crashing out of the first two rounds. However, a first win in Round 4 at Le Mans laid the way for six more victories as he pushed Stefan Bradl for the title closely, until a crash in practice at the Malaysian GP ended Márquez's season prematurely. Problems with his vision as a result of that crash cut short his 2012 pre-season, but he was well on the pace in the final Test at Jerez and was an instant favourite for the 2012 title. And Márquez did not disappoint as he took victory in the first race of the season in Qatar, and made his intentions clear with some tough and controversial overtakes in the race. A first DNF after a crash in a wet Le Mans gave his rivals hope, as compatriot Pol Espargaró mounted a strong challenge. Yet after a coming together of the two at their respective home race in Catalunya, where Espargaró crashed out and Márquez collected valuable points, the title race was strongly skewed in the champion's favour.A total of eight wins, one of which in Japan saw him fight his way through the whole pack, and 13 podiums ultimately saw the Spaniard take his maiden Moto2™ World Championship title before moving up to the Repsol Honda Team in the MotoGP™ premier class next season.Marc Márquez facts:At the age of 19 years 254 days he is the third youngest rider of all-time to win the world title in the intermediate-class.He is the fifth Spanish rider to win the intermediate-class world title, joining: Sito Pons (1988 & 1989), Dani Pedrosa (2004 & 2005), Jorge Lorenzo (2006 & 2007) and Toni Elias (2010).Márquez is the first rider to win the Moto2 world title using a Suter chassis. He has already had eight victories in 2012, which is a new record for most Moto2 wins in a single season. With 25 wins already in Grand Prix racing, Marquez has won more Grand Prix races than any other rider in the history of the sport whilst still a teenager.MotoGP Career:2008: 125cc World Championship – 13th position on KTM, 13 starts, 63 points2009: 125cc World Championship – 8th position on KTM, 16 starts, 94 points2010: 125cc World Championship – 1st position on Derbi, 17 starts, 310 points2011: Moto2™ World Championship – 2nd position on Suter, 13 starts, 251 points2012: Moto2™ World Championship – 1st position on Suter, 16 starts, 299 pointsSource motogp.comPhoto Repsol Honda
