Ostberg wins plane duel

Story from www.wrc.com

Driving a 1966 Ford GT40, powered by a 650bhp NASCAR engine, Ostberg had been due to go up against a F16 fighter plane (shown in the centre of the photograph) until the Norwegian army intervened and cancelled the planned duel, leaving Ostberg to race an aerobatic plane (pictured left) instead.
“Unfortunately the Norwegian army stopped the attempt just a few minutes before the start, so I had to do the duel against an acrobatic plane,” said Ostberg, currently third in the race for the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship. “The Ford GT40 I was driving had a top speed of 340kph and both the plane and me where doing a standing start, going for 1000 metres, doing a U-turn and then 1000 metres back to the finish line. I won with a good margin.”
Ostberg, who normally drives a Ford Fiesta RS WRC for the Adapta World Rally Team, won’t be competing on the next world championship event, Brother Rally New Zealand from 21-24 June, but will be back in action on Neste Oil Rally Finland in early August when he will be expected to challenge for a podium finish alongside co-driver Jonas Andersson.
