Tribute to Jarno Saarinen

Imatra circuit and Motor Club celebrate anniversaries with former Grand Prix stars – Tribute to Jarno SaarinenOn August 4 and 5, the Imatra Motorklub (IMK) organised a celebration event for the 75th anniversary of its founding and the 50th anniversary of the Imatra circuit, created in 1962 and a Grand Prix venue from 1964 until 1982. This event, dubbed "Memories of Imatrajano", was attended by several top riders in Grand Prix history: World Champions Giacomo Agostini, Jim Redman, Phil Read, Luigi Taveri, Pierpaolo Bianchi, Dieter Braun, Christian Sarron, Marco Lucchinelli and Mario Lega, and various other riders from the 70s and 80s were invited by the organisers. The atmosphere was very convivial and friendly. At the track on Saturday and Sunday, many spectators – most of whom had certainly been present at the Grand Prix in the 70s and 80s – visited the paddock to see the bikes and collect autographs from the riders and then turned to the track to watch the riders – and the motorcycles, with old two- and four-stroke "music" sounding in the air.A tribute was paid to Jarno Saarinen – in the presence of his widow Soeli and his brother Jari. The "Flying Finn" disappeared from the tracks in the Monza tragedy in 1973 after "revolutionising" the little world of the Continental Circus with his riding style and performances. His 1972 250cc World title included a win on his home country's circuit. Pictures legends:Giacomo AgostiniPhil ReadMarco Lucchinelli, Mario Lega (24)Jarno Saarinen
