Algarve track joins the running for 2013 calendar slot | 2013 F1 season

Algarve track joins the running for 2013 calendar slot is an original article from F1 Fanatic. If this article has been published anywhere other than F1 Fanatic it is an infringement of copyright.

Fernando Alonso, Renault, Algarve, 2009Portugal’s Algarve International Circuit has been suggested as a possible venue for the tenth round of the 2013 F1 calendar.

With less than 50 days to go until the first practice session of the season in Australia a vacant slot remains in this year’s schedule.

Bernie Ecclestone told Austria’s Salzburger Nachrichten the Portuguese circuit could hold the race on July 21st. He added France is also still being considered for a return to the Grand Prix calendar.

If a race were held in Portugal on July 21st the teams would face a logistical challenge to arrive in Hungary in time for the next round on the 28th.

The Algarve International Circuit was built in 2008 at a cost of around £200m using private money. Construction took just ten months. Its F1 configuration measures 4.692km (2.92 miles).

When it was built the owners hoped it would become a popular testing destination for F1 teams. But the introduction of the testing ban scuppered those hopes and the track only saw F1 cars in action during the 2008/09 off-season.

However its undulating layout means it stands out among other recent new-build circuits and has been praised by many of the drivers who have visited it. The track held the GP2 season finale in 2009 and last year played host to the FIA’s World Touring Car Championship and GT1 World Championship (see video below).

The Portuguese Grand Prix last appeared on the F1 calendar in 1996. The race at Estoril was won by Jacques Villeneuve for Williams.

Portugal hasn’t had an F1 driver on the grid since Tiago Monteiro in 2006. Since then Alvaro Parente and Filipe Albuquerque have come close to reaching F1 but fallen short. However Antonio Felix da Costa is a rising star on Red Bull’s young driver programme and may well be Portugal’s next F1 driver.

Continental Issues Recall for ContiMotion Tires

Continental has begun a voluntary recall for its ContiMotion line of sport-touring tires. Affecting 1,700 units in the market, Continental says the tires in question are sized at 180/60R16 and under certain conditions these tires may have uneven wear, groove cracking, and in some cases even belt lift. It goes without saying that these circumstances would leave the tires unsafe for use, though Continental has not received any reports about accidents resulting from these conditions. Most affected...

Ecclestone: F1 doesn’t need Concorde deal | F1 Fanatic round-up

Ecclestone: F1 doesn’t need Concorde deal is an original article from F1 Fanatic. If this article has been published anywhere other than F1 Fanatic it is an infringement of copyright.

Marco Tronchetti Provera, Bernie Ecclestone, Shanghai, 2012In the round-up: Bernie Ecclestone says the 2013 Concorde Agreement, which the FIA said would be settled “within weeks” last October, does not need to be signed.

Your daily digest of F1 news, views, features and more.

‘No need’ for Concorde – Ecclestone (ESPN)

“We don’t need the Concorde Agreement signed. It doesn’t matter to me whether we have got the Concorde Agreement or not.”

Warwick promises Silver lining (Sky)

“We have increased our parking facility, we have improved the camping facilities which let us down a bit last year and we have increased park-and-ride. So we are going to try and take a few more people off-site and bring them in by coaches and that will make a massive difference to the number of cars on-site.”

Emilio’s perfect storm (FT, registration required)

“Some of [Santander head Emilio] Botin’s success must stem from his sheer physical energy. A friend recalls seeing him at the Monza Formula One Grand Prix a couple of years ago, when Ferrari – sponsored by Santander – swept to victory with Spaniard Fernando Alonso at the wheel. ‘Emilio had a little Ferrari flag and as soon as the car was over the finish line, he leapt out of his box waving it furiously and then sprinted along towards Alonso. He ran for 200m. He’s incredible.’”

Niki Lauda And The Brawn/Lowe Saga At Mercedes (Speed)

“Brawn made it clear that the Lowe saga, and the suggestions that Ross was on his way out, had created some instability. The fuss certainly confused Hamilton, who obviously saw Ross as one of the main reasons to join Mercedes. ‘I think it’s disappointing that it got into the media, because it can be disturbing for the team,’ said Brawn. ‘That’s the disappointment. I want our guys focused completely on doing the best job they can for this coming season.’”

Go West! Maybe a little south too!

Quite a ride today. Headed into the far southwestern corner of NC and dropped on into north GA. Wound up soaked to the skin (despite good gear) and frozen. Weatherman said 60s and 20% chance of rain. Reality? Maybe 50, and N. GA had plenty of rain to spare, I even brought some home in my boots...

US Routes used: 19, 23, 64, 74, 76, 129, 441
GA Routes used: Alt 17, 75, 255, 197
GA Routes I was SUPPOSED to use: 180, 348 (oops, missed a turn...)

In the beginning, ran though the Nantahala Gorge on US19/74. Nice area and home of the 2012 ICF Freestyle Canoe World Cup. Didn't stop for pic, but this if the off season and nothing was really going on.

1st stop - Murphy, NC. We came through here on one of the 2011 Deals Gap trips.
Old train bridge, part of the long abandoned old Southern (absorbed into modern day Norfolk Southern) Murphy Branch. Based on the amount of time since abandonment, I don't know that I would even WALK on this bridge...

Old Depot from the same line:

A couple restored cars for railfan nostalgia:

On to an interesting place called Fields of the Wood. This is the world's largest 10 Commandments. Odd park, BUT it was a great ride getting there! There is even a massive cross too. You can easily find this on Google Maps satellite view it's so large.

The commandments (poorly stitched pan, didn't have a wide enough lens)

Looking across from the top at the "Wall of Psalms" and the "Psalm Walk."

Looking down the stairs for a sense of perspective. That's a LOT of stairs to climb in full gear (aside from helmet/gloves)

Cross of Nations. Not sure where the flags are, but this is a cross when seen from above. Hard to tell here though.

View from the top near the cross:

Heading back toward Murphy, I saw a road sign & historical marker for "Hiawassee Dam" so I just headed that way. This dam is 307 feet tall, and it took from 1936 to 1940 to complete. Not as big as Fontana, but pretty large.

The top. That is one a service crane the roadway goes under. It has two 60-ton hoists.

An original turbine removed at some point probably for age/upgrades. The marker behind the bike gives the stats: 80,000HP, 120 Max RPM, built at Newport News Shipyard, and weighs in a 43 tons.

Next stop? Blood Mountain GA on US129 north of Suches, GA. The peak is 4,458, and the AT crosses at the highest point of the roadway. Now, remember the "Should have taken" from above? This is TWICE I'm missed a turn an wound up on Blood Mountain. Last time was on the 2011 NCS Deals Gap trip when the guy on the red SV (Sorry, can't remember a name now) had to chase my ass down and lead me back to the turn I missed.

In the rain and fog (this is where the soaking and freezing began too)

Last time on Blood Mtn. I nearly lowsided. I was WAY over, knee down etc., and caught a pot hole. The front almost tucked sliding a few inches wide, but the rear gave up completely. I broke one of my pucks using my knee and sheer strength to get the bike back in line.

Next stop? Helen, GA. Neat little town, and a fun place to enjoy Oktoberfest. However, not many pics of the coolest part because I didn't want to pay to part for just a few minutes to grab some pics. Here is what I did grab. These were on the back section and not the main drag.

Lights. This is also the road to the Festhalle that is an absolute riot during Oktoberfest.

Headed to a nice little dive for lunch. This bar is probably my favorite one in Helen.

More lights and a building that looks like a modern outhouse.

Headed out of Helen, intending to go to the Georgia Guidestones. However, the rain got crazy heavy so I just turned north toward home. Before turning, I found the Nacoochee Indian Mound. It was the center of the Cherokee town of Gauxule. Desoto visited it back in 1540. It's 190 feet long 150 feet wide and 20 feet high.

Saw a sign for Clayton which was on the way home from where I was, so I went that way. Too bad it was the long way and simply prolonged my soaking and freezing. However, GA197 is quite a fun ride and is worth hitting if in the area! I did find a random covered bridge. No marker though, so I don't know anything about it.

As I dropped into Clayton, it seems they're wanting a white Christmas according to the sleigh in their Christmas decorations:

These Are Sort of the Ducati Desmosedici GP13 Tech Specs

Very much a cloak and dagger affair, it is always fairly entertaining to read the information that the manufacturers release regarding their MotoGP machines. Despite the fact that these are some of the most drool-over motorcycles on the planet, by rule of thumb the factories publish only the most general technical specifications possible. If a company like Ducati thought they could get away with it, the release for the Ducati Desmosedici GP13 technical specifications would read ...

Nearly all Posts Gone?

Sorry to start a new thread but I think something has gone wrong. I logged in this morning to check threads I had recently participated in and every single one of my posts has gone. I can't access them through my profile and it now says I only have 23 posts! I was approaching 8,000 last time I looked. I tried viewing through Tapatalk and they are missing there also.

I hope they can be reinstated. :(

Is anybody else experiencing this when they log in?

Arai Corsair-V Nicky Hayden GP "Easy Rider" Limited Edition Helmet

Saying that Nicky Hayden’s helmet from the 2012 Indianapolis GP turned some heads would be an understatement. In fact, it was so popular that Arai decided to produce a small run for sale. With less than 200 of these available in the US, the Nicky GP “Easy Rider” edition of the Corsair-V is a true limited edition.

The design of the helmet pays homage to the American flag half-helmet worn by Peter Fonda in the film Easy Rider. The lower front even has Nicky’s nose, mouth and chin, giving the illusion that it actually is a half-helmet. At the rear, a caricature of Hayden is seen sporting his signature smirk while cruising Route 69 on a chopper.

If you would like to add the Arai Corsair-V Nicky GP to your collection, just give Brad a call at 866.931.6644 810 or get in touch with him through the forum. Is email more convenient? Feel free to send those to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get right back to you!
