Sunday Summary at Brno: Of Racing Like Champions, Bad Luck, & Replacement Riders

Dani Pedrosa has something of a reputation. Blisteringly fast when out on his own, but put him under pressure and he crumbles. Once passed, he is history, and he will trouble you no more. There has never been that much truth to that accusation, and the MotoGP race at Brno should drive the final nail into its coffin, for what the diminutive Spaniard displayed on Sunday was the heart and courage of a lion. The ...

Enduro 2 Class success for Salminen & Husqvarna in Sweden

Husqvarna Enduro Team by CH Racing team riders Juha Salminen and Alex Salvini enjoyed podium success at the sixth round of the Enduro World Championship, the GP of Sweden, with Salminen winning the Enduro 2 class on day one before again finishing on the podium on day two in second. Salvini, who had a day to forget on day one, bounced back in style to place third in class on day two – the Italians second podium result of the series.Despite heavy rain during the days leading up to the Swedish race the event remained largely dry, but proved to be a long and challenging one. Making things tough for competitors was a typically Swedish forest enduro test that played a key role in deciding the results. Recording the fastest Enduro 2 class time during the Friday night super test Salminen went on to enjoy a near perfect start to the opening day. Quickly asserting himself at the front of the class the Finn went on to top four of the day's special tests before placing a sizeable 39 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.Unable to explain exactly why things didn't go quite as well on day two Juha placed as runner-up to Frenchman Pierre-Alexandre Renet. The fastest rider on the all-important enduro test on day one, on day two Salminen dominated the motocross test but wasn't able to continue his mastery of the fast paced enduro special stage. Nevertheless Juha claimed a well deserved second place result and now looks forward to his home GP in Finland, next weekend.Salminen's Enduro 2 class team-mate Alex Salvini had a day to forget on day one, but bounced back to claim an impressive third on day two. Locked in battle with Spain's Cristobal Guerrero and Frenchman Johnny Aubert, Alex secured two winning rides on the technical extreme test while remaining consistently fast and mistake free throughout the day.In the Enduro 1 class Matti Seistola's hopes of a double podium result failed to materialise as the Finn placed one place off the podium on day one in fourth before enduring a highly disappointing second day's competition. Topping the Enduro 1 class during the Friday night super test Matti found himself a little off the pace during day one's opening lap, which ultimately kept him off the podium. Numerous falls on day two saw Matti place 10th. After finishing seventh on day one Spain's Lorenzo Santolino upped his pace on day two and placed fifth.Matti Seistola – Enduro 1: 'It was one of those weekends when it seems nothing goes the way you want it to. The first day started well, and I felt good, but I took it a little too easy on the enduro test. I had to push hard to try and take back time and after a strong final lap I finished fourth. It's not what I wanted in conditions I like, but I started to ride better as the day went on. Everything went wrong on day two. I crashed six times and just couldn't get things together. I hurt my back on day one so needed to take pain killers, which made me feel sleepy. It's really disappointing, but I hope I can get some work done on my back and come back strong in Finland.'Juha Salminen – Enduro 2: 'It's been a good weekend for me, and a really enjoyable race. The first day went really well. I just pushed hard and was able to finish the day without any mistakes. I felt good on the enduro test, which was important as that was where you could make time up. I managed to stay mistake free on the other two tests, and felt good on the motocross test, so the first day was good. I don't know why but I just didn't feel so good on day two. I was fast on the motocross test, but not fast enough on the enduro test. Let's see how next weekend goes in Finland, I'm looking forward to my home race.'Alex Salvini – Enduro 2: 'I really struggled on day one, especially on the enduro test. I just didn't have a good feeling, didn't ride well, and crashed on the second lap. It was a frustrating day. Thankfully, things were much better on day two. I spent the whole day fighting with Johnny Aubert and Cristobal Guerrero, always very close to them, and was able to finish the day with a good final lap. I finally got on the podium again, which is great. I hope I can do the same in Finland next weekend.' Communication Husqvarna - www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com -

Jonathan Rea To Test Repsol Honda, Replace Casey Stoner During Absence

Jonathan Rea has been drafted in to replace Casey Stoner during the Australian's absence due to the ankle injury he suffered at Indianapolis. The Ulsterman is to test the factory Honda RC213V at Brno during the official MotoGP test on Monday, and then again at Aragon in just over a week's time.

The decision to draft in Rea was made as a reward for his loyalty to Honda throughout the years. Rea has stuck with Honda in WSBK, and achieving strong results on a CBR1000RR that is starting to get a little long in the tooth. Rea winning the Suzuka 8 hours endurance race earlier this year was also greatly appreciated by HRC top management.

How many races Rea will get on the bike is still uncertain. Casey Stoner has now arrived in Australia, and is expected to have surgery on Wednesday. He is almost certain to be forced to miss Misano, and the following race at Aragon is also uncertain. None of the remaining rounds on the MotoGP calendar clash with World Superbikes, so though Rea would find himself with a full schedule, it would be possible for Rea to substitute for Stoner for the rest of the year, if necessary.

Below is the official press release from Honda, and a video statement from Rea courtesy of the Honda World Superbike team:

Holder prevails in Cardiff

Australian star Chris Holder admits he had to battle with his nerves, despite picking up his second FIM Fogo British Speedway Grand Prix win in three years in Cardiff on Saturday night. The Sydneysider scored 23 points out of a possible 24 as he topped the Millennium Stadium podium ahead of Poole Pirates team mate Krzysztof Kasprzak. Swedish star Antonio Lindback was third and his compatriot Fredrik Lindgren was fourth. But Holder dominated proceedings and, after being headed by Nicki Pedersen in heat two, he stormed to six wins from as many rides. The 24-year-old is now second in the World Championship on 117 points and just a point behind leader Greg Hancock with three rounds to race. Pedersen is third on 112, while Jason Crump has 103 in fourth. The Poole-based rider won in the Millennium Stadium in his debut SGP season in 2010 and finished third last term. But Holder admits the white-hot atmosphere created by a 38,000-strong crowd still gives him the jitters. He said: "It's unreal. I was super nervous before the meeting on the parade with all the people. It's difficult to just concentrate on riding – you really want to do well and you're hoping it's going to happen. When it does, it's the best feeling ever. All night went well. But just because you win a race here and there, it doesn't mean much. You've got to keep going. You could easily stuff it up in the semi-final and be out. I was just concentrating as best I could and to come out of the last corner in front … there's isn't a better feeling on a speedway bike than that." Holder started the night 17 points behind Hancock, but slashed the gap to one after the Californian missed out on the semi-finals on seven points. That's the first time the 42-year-old has failed to reach the last eight since the FIM Nordic SGP in Vojens on September 11, 2010. Herbie suffered an engine failure while second in race 17, which would have secured his passage into the last eight. Holder knows he enjoyed a bit of fortune there, but was quick to pay tribute to one of his boyhood idols. He said: "You've got to give him credit. He's at the top of the table still and he's not just there because he is getting lucky. He has been consistently good day in and day out. He had an off-night and there's not much you can do about that. His bike stopped when he was in second and he could quite easily have been in the semis and the final. You've got to be in it to win it and hopefully it works out for me." With Hancock out of contention, Crump missing out on six points and Pedersen finishing last in his semi after scoring 11 in the heats, the final was a must-win race for Holder. He took full advantage of his World Championship rivals' misfortune, but admits he didn't know the point situation before the race. He said: "To be honest, I had no idea. I just wanted to win and get as many points as I could. When I saw that two of the guys had missed out on the semi and Nicki dropped out, I thought that it would bunk me up if I had a good result. I can't believe it. I'm one point off the lead right now – it's great." Holder's face lit up in the press conference as his five-month-old son Max helped Dad face the media. There is no doubt fatherhood has given the rider extra drive and focus this year and he was pleased to celebrate his victory with his young family. He said: "Just having my girlfriend Sealy here, Max and my brothers was great. I had a hospitality box and it was full of my mates. It's such a cool buzz. When I turn my phone on, it's going to be going crazy. My family back home got up to watch this at 2am and they'll probably wish that they were here. But I'm happy I got the win." Runner-up Kasprzak was given a very late call-up for the British SGP after Danish rider Kenneth Bjerre suffered a broken leg at Peterborough on Thursday. KK was in action at Swindon that night and cancelled his flight back to Poland on Friday, before scrambling some equipment together to race in world speedway's biggest event. He said: "My manager Gordon Day called me to say I was in at 9am on Friday. After the meeting at Swindon I had only one engine. I got one engine from my Dad and the second engine was from my promoter Matt Ford at Poole. This was the engine I used. It was fast and I'm very happy. It was prepared by Peter Johns and I want to say thanks because I was very quick." Lindback was also elated after achieving his second straight rostrum finish following his victory in the FIM Fogo Italian SGP at Terenzano on August 11. The Rio Rocket is just two points behind eighth-placed Andreas Jonsson in the battle for the final automatic qualification berth for the 2013 World Championship. And he is keen to keep piling on the pressure. "It's going well," he said. "I'm happy. I'm two points off Andreas so I'm getting closer. I'll take it from him." Next up for the SGP elite is the FIM Scandinavian SGP at Malilla's G&B Arena in the forests of Sweden on September 8. Cool New Motorcycle Helmets Available at MotoSport.com

Arai Corsair V Helmet - Isle of Man TT 2012

The new Corsair-V proves again that Arai Helmets main focus is the experienced rider who knows what a real Helmet should do and have. It doesn't fling "fashion" at you, it advances the art of building better helmets for riders. It's improvements and innovations reach down to the smallest details. Why? Partly obsession. Partly because Arai believes every part of a helmet is interrelated in both design and function. They don't believe in change for the sake of change, fad, or marketing shock value.

One major reason for Arai's legendary reputation for unmatched comfort and fit is their belief that the shape of a rider's head (the relationship between its length and width) is as important as head size in getting the best helmet fit. That's why they go to the considerable time, effort - and expense - to create more than one interior shell shape. (Arai was the first and only helmet manufacturer to acknowledge and address the fact that not all heads are shaped the same.)
  • DF-10 Diffuser - The newest generation diffuser has enhanced air inlets to increase airflow efficiency even better than the original Corsair. It's new middle-intake slot creates an accelerated venturi effect for even faster venting of stale air. New larger upper vent toggles make operation easier, even with thick gloves. And the center top vent has been re-sculpted to provide more air intake: it also has a larger toggle.
  • Peripheral Belting - Devised by Arai for it's newest Formula-1 helmets, this belt goes across the shells forehead area just above the eye opening, further enhancing the helmet's structural integrity while still maintaining exceptional flexibility and low weight. The belt is incorporated into Arai's most-advanced SNC (Structural Net Composite) shell construction to create the new PB-SNC shell.
  • Wider Eyeport - A real-world example of the Arai's philosophy of all parts working together: The Peripheral Belt's forehead-area strengthening let them create a new 10 mm wider eyeport opening (5 mm at each side) enhancing the riders peripheral vision and feeling of "openness" inside the helmet. While the wider eyeport will be beneficial to racers, it aids all riders.
  • Patented New AirWing - Arai's exclusive, adjustable new AirWing is designed to greatly reduce drag, turbulence and buffeting, providing you with unprecedented aerodynamic performance options via five hand-adjustable attack angles. At race speeds, or full-tuck position, run the AirWing in a lower position. Riding Sport or Standard-style bikes, run the AirWing in one of the middle positions. In an upright riding position it works best at one of the upper angles.
  • Removable / Replaceable Vented Neckroll - The Corsair-V's neck roll is now removable and replaceable, and adds an additional exhaust vent through its bottom via shallow channels in the EPS liner - yet another outlet for interior air.
  • Latest-Generation Dry-Cool Liner - Distinguished by it's silver-grey color, Arai's Dry-Cool liner has repositioned the rear mounting-snaps closer to the liner bottom for a more secure fit, making it exclusive to the Corsair-V.
  • Emergency Cheekpad Release System - This ground-breaking Arai safety innovation, originally introduced on the VX-Pro3 dirt helmet, was specifically developed to allow easier access to an injured rider (giving you a real idea of where Arai's priorities lie). The cheekpads are designed to slide out easily with the use of integrated pull tabs, making helmet removal much easier for trained medical technicians.
  • Outward-Flaring Hyper-Ridge - The previous Hyper-Ridge curved in; this one flares out. The result is a larger opening at the helmets bottom, making the helmet easier to get on and off. The Hyper-Ridge reinforcement band circle at the bottom of the shell, adding shell strength there; it's also said to help in "significantly lowering the helmets center of gravity", contributing to a better over all balance and making the helmet rest easier on your head.
  • Brow-Vent Channeling - Arai's distinctive faceshield Brow-Vents now send incoming air to the temple instead of the face, directing air to the ear area missed by many helmet ventilation systems. The airflow over the temple artery reportedly also helps cool the blood flow to the brain area.
  • Compact Organic Shell Shape - The new Corsair-V's shell shape is even more compact and aerodynamic then the original Corsair's. It not only looks smaller, sleeker and more natural (instead of big and round), it helps the shell fit the human head shape more closely, making it look better and "flow" better in the wind.
  • Series and Faceshield - The 10 mm-wider series faceshield is exclusive to the Corsair-V. It fits so flush that it looks like a continuation of the shell, and requires two small raised sliders in the front of the side-pods to keep the shield from contacting the helmet's upper shell when raised.
  • Side-Vent Exhaust Ports - The new design exhausts heat more efficiently. Now "sculpted" into the new rear shell shape, they have been shown to work in concert with the AirWing to greatly add lateral helmet stability at speed.
  • Noise-Absorbing Ear-Pad Foam - Addressing the issue of the noise in every helmet, Arai has introduced this new foam to help block assorted noises from reaching your ears.

Pedrosa had faith he would win

Share

Dani Pedrosa said he still thought he could win the Czech Grand Prix even when Jorge Lorenzo overtook him half a lap from the finish. In an epic showdown at the end of the Brno race, Lorenzo slipped inside long-time Pedrosa on the final lap, only for the Honda to retaliate going into the last few corners and edge back ahead. Lorenzo then braked ultra-late into the final S-bend only to run wide and let Pedrosa accelerate through and claim victory.

Front row start for Pedrosa in Czech Republic

Dani Pedrosa Brno 2012

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa will start tomorrow's Grand Prix of the Czech Republic from 3rd position on the grid, his 9th front row start of the season.
In this morning's FP3, Pedrosa was fastest by over seven tenths and felt there were areas he could still improve. However, it was a difficult qualifying session for the Spaniard who had a small crash 10 minutes into the session in turn 12 on a used soft rear tyre, which left him with no other option than to use his second bike. On this bike, Pedrosa was able to maintain a similar pace to the morning session but couldn't improve as he had much more chatter. The team will work hard tonight to repair the damaged bike in time for warm up tomorrow morning.

Casey Stoner, who announced on Thursday he will undergo surgery on his injured ankle in Australia, left Europe from Geneva today with his family as planned.

Dani Pedrosa
"I had a small crash at the beginning of the session and unfortunately we were unable to use that bike anymore and had to switch to the second bike. Normally the bikes are very similar and I don't know why, but this time the second bike was much more rigid and I had more chatter, especially in the front. We tried to fix it but we weren't able to so in the end I tried to get my best out of it and finally on the last lap I was able to take a front row spot, which is always important. Anyway the bike is working well, I just hope tomorrow we can use our preferred bike, as this morning it felt very good, and have a good race."

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 to field all-British line-up in 2013

Herve Poncharal Monster Yamaha Tech3

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team is delighted to confirm that it will field an all-British rider line-up with Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith in the 2013 MotoGP World Championship.

Crutchlow has signed a new one-year agreement after a fantastic second season in MotoGP. The 26-year-old is currently fifth in the World Championship standings and he has scored eight top six finishes and started from the front row of the grid in three races.

Smith will move up from the Tech 3 Racing Moto2 project. A consistent top six challenger in the ultra-competitive Moto2 class, the 21-year-old has signed a two-year contract for 2013 and 2014.

Cal Crutchlow:
“I am delighted to commit my future to the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team for at least one more year. Together we have made huge progress this season and achieved some strong results and I am confident we can be even more competitive in 2013. Yamaha and Monster have been very loyal to me over a long period of time and they both made it clear how much they wanted to keep me for next year. That was incredibly flattering and I really appreciate their support. Next year will be my fifth with Yamaha and I am excited to continue my MotoGP career with them. My relationship with Tech 3 also played a big part in my decision. Herve Poncharal and all my crew have given me unbelievable backing since I joined in 2011. Yamaha put together a great package for 2012 and next year it will be even stronger. Hopefully I can reward their loyalty by challenging for the podium throughout 2013, which I know we are capable of.”

Bradley Smith:
“It is an honour for me to get the opportunity to move to MotoGP with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. I have dreamed about being a MotoGP rider for as long as I can remember and to get this chance with such a professional and successful team is fantastic. It is clear from the results achieved by Cal and Andrea (Dovizioso) in 2012 that together Tech 3, Yamaha and Monster is a very competitive package and I can't wait to begin this new adventure in my career. I know I have a huge challenge ahead of me but I believe in my ability and I am grateful to Herve Poncharal, Yamaha and Monster for showing a lot of confidence in me to offer me this chance. I already know the Tech 3 Team so it won't be s uch a huge transition for me and I have a good relationship with Cal. This will be very important because I can learn a lot from him. I am now looking forward to finishing the season strongly in Moto2 for Tech 3 Racing before I get my first chance to ride a YZR-M1 machine in Valencia."

Herve Poncharal – Team Manager:
“I am really happy to confirm that Cal and Bradley will be with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team in 2013. Cal has done an amazing job this season and I am convinced that he is only going to continue to improve. He is a fast rider but also a big personality and we were determined to keep him with us for next season. We know there was a lot of interest in him, so for us to capture his signature is a big positive. Bradley has demonstrated his high potential in Moto2 and I have every confidence in him that he will be competit ive in MotoGP. Of course he faces a very difficult challenge because the level now in MotoGP is incredible. But he has a great attitude and a big desire to make this new chapter in his career a successful one. What I can assure him is that Tech 3, Yamaha and Monster will give him 100% support to help him show his potential. I have no doubt this is the strongest line-up we could have put together for next season and we can look ahead to 2013 with high expectations.”
