2012 Phillip Island MotoGP Post-Race Round Up: Of Champions, Home Crowds, And Past Glory

Two freshly anointed champions, three impressive winners, and a large crowd of ecstatic and yet wistful fans, come to say goodbye to a departing hero and hope to spot a new one arriving. Even the weather cooperated. That's how good the Australian Grand Prix was at Phillip Island this year. All three races were a lot less intense than the previous two weekends, but even that didn't matter, because of the manner in which the winners secured their victories, and because the Australian crowd had something to cheer about in all three categories.

It started in the Moto3 race, where Sandro Cortese rode one of his best races of the year, the title he clinched last weekend at Sepang clearly a weight off his mind, allowing the young German to ride freely. He had Miguel Oliveira to contend with for most of the race, but in the end, he would not be denied. The home crowd still had much to cheer about, as local boy Arthur Sissis, the 17-year-old former Red Bull Rookie, won an intense battle for third, putting an Australian on the podium for the first time on Sunday.

Stefan Bradl Takes 6th Place After a Thrilling Battle at the Island GP

Fast and flowing Phillip Island track was sunny and packed today for the last local hero Casey Stoner’s home GP who confirmed his dominance winning the 27lap race whilst the LCR Honda’s racer Stefan Bradl was again a strong performer finishing 6th.

In his first visit to the ocean circuit on a MotoGP machine, the German had vastly improved from Friday’s practices gaining more confidence aboard his RC213V and starting a close battle with Dovizioso and Bautista for the 4th place till the last corner. Now Bradl is holding the 8th place in the world standing with 135 points.

Stefan Bradl:

“Off course we are all happy because we did not expect such a close fight for the 4th place today after the difficult first day of practices we had here. It’s a shame that we lost the 4th place because I was on hard tyre today and had a small advantage on my competitors so I thought I could take it. But the other guys had other advantages on me so we were plus or minus on the same level but in the last lap I was stopped by Bautista and Dovi passed me. I am not the one who usually lost the battle but I am quite happy anyway because we showed our pace once again and want to thank the Team for their excellent job this weekend”

Frustrating fourth for Redding at Phillip Island

Scott Redding took a fourth place finish in today's Australian Moto2 Grand Prix, but the Marc VDS rider was disappointed to miss out on a podium finish after running in second until the very final lap. Mika Kallio looked all set to claim a top five finish until he crashed out of the race on the penultimate lap after being hit by Simone Corsi.

Redding took advantage of his sixth front row of the season to get away with the leading group, but had no answer to the ultra-fast laps that eventual race winner, Pol Espargaro, put in to immediately pull a gap at the front. The 19-year-old Briton quickly got the better of Marc Marquez to take second place, a position he held until the final lap.

Anthony West managed to force his way past Marquez after bridging the gap to the battle for second place, before making a similar move on Redding to demote the Marc VDS rider to third, which quickly became fourth as Marquez, pushed his way through on the final lap. The Spaniard, who was crowned the 2012 Moto2 World Champion this afternoon, pulled such a big gap with the pass that Redding was unable to mount a challenge on the final lap and was forced to settle for fourth place at the chequered flag.

Starting from the fifth row of the grid, Kallio battled his way through the field to eventually join the battle for fifth position, but the 29-year-old Finn's race ended in frustration when he was hit by Simone Corsi and crashed out on the penultimate lap.

The Marc VDS Racing Team now return to Europe, where they will contest the final round of the Moto2 World Championship at Valencia, which takes place from 9th - 11th November.

Scott Redding #45: 4th Position

"I'm disappointed to have finished off the podium today, because it was there for the taking. I didn’t get the best of starts, but forced my way through on the opening lap only to be held up a little by Zarco as Espargaro disappeared off into the distance. I knew I had the measure of Marquez, so put in a pass quite early, before settling down and trying to conserve the tyres. I could see Westy was catching us, but I was already on the limit and couldn't defend the position. I thought I could hold on to third, but then Marquez came past like he had another gear and he was gone before I could even think about putting in a pass on him. Fourth is not what I was looking for here, but at least it's moved me closer to Lüthi and Iannone in the championship."

Mika Kallio #36: DNF

"It's been a difficult weekend, but I thought I could at least salvage it with a decent result today. I got away well from the start and started picking up places immediately, eventually working my way up to the battle for fifth place between Aegerter and Zarco. I was pretty confident I could take fifth before the flag, as I had the pace to pass, but then Corsi ran into me and down I went with less than two laps to go. Obviously, after doing all the hard work to get into the top five, I'm disappointed to lose out so close to the end of the race because of someone else's mistake."

Michael Bartholemy: Team Principal

"Scott rode a good race today, but was unlucky to get caught out by West and Marquez right at the end and miss out on a podium finish. When West went past him he still looked a safe bet for third, but then Marquez seemed to find another gear and Scott simply had no answer. I know Scott is disappointed, but he rode an almost perfect race and should take heart from that as we head now to the final round at Valencia. Mika struggled in practice and qualifying but, as he's done so often in the past, upped his level in the race. He was looking good for a top five finish, until he was hit by Corsi on the penultimate lap, couldn't hold onto the bike and crashed out. It was a tough way to finish a race in which he'd done so much hard work. Hopefully both riders can finish the season on a high at the final round in Valencia. Congratulations to Marc Marquez on a well deserved championship win today."

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC213V) will start from the pole position for his assault on a record sixth consecutive Australian Grand Prix win after rebounding from an early crash to set the fastest time on a cold and blustery day on his beloved Phillip Island Circuit. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa will join him on the front row after qualifying third.

Stoner was the leader almost from the start of the one-hour session, held in typically changing Phillip Island weather. And he was on top when he fell for the first time since his return to racing at the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi. Ironically, he fell on the entry of Honda Corner, a hairpin right, one of the few rights on the heavily left-biased track. Fortunately, Stoner was able to avoid the tumbling motorcycle in the gravel trap and did no further damage to his surgically repaired right ankle. That was evident when he bounded to his feet to return to his pit box.

After only a five minute respite he was out on his second bike. He would improve his lap time three more times, finishing with a best of 1m, 29.623s to capture his fifth pole position and first since the U.S. Grand Prix before the summer break. Stoner was then denied a chance to further lower his pole time when a light rain fell in the waning moments of qualifying.

Having earlier announced that he would be retiring at the end of his final campaign, Stoner is determined to go out with a victory in front of what promises to be a record crowd of his fellow countrymen.

Pedrosa was not able to challenge for the pole after encountering a few problems. First was that he was not able to get heat into the hard rear tyre option. Then came the realisation that he had chosen the wrong motorcycle for his final charge at pole. On the last run he finally got feeling into his tyres and was able to set his best lap time.

Having won five of the past six races, Pedrosa goes into Sunday’s race hopeful of further cutting into the championship lead of Jorge Lorenzo, the Yamaha rider who qualified second.

“It's been a good progression over these past few races and it's great to get pole for my home grand prix. The bike has been good since Friday and I'm feeling comfortable on it again. It wasn't an easy session this afternoon. We went out on a hard tyre and on my out lap, as I was peeling into the Honda turn; the bike decided to flip me. I tried to make sure I kept my leg out of the way as I came off, fortunately it didn't get caught up. My left hip is hurting a little as I landed on it, but hopefully we shouldn't have any issues with it tomorrow. The bike feels pretty good for race pace. We would have liked to have done some more work in this afternoon's session, but we lost time after the crash. A big thanks to all the fans for coming out and putting up with this weather, hopefully we can turn this pole into a win tomorrow.”

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 3rd – 1m 30.575s

“I was trying some different things on the bike to get a little more comfortable, but they didn't work out very well for the middle of the session. On my first soft rear tyre I couldn't improve and then on my last run I was going quicker on the first lap and rain arrived. Anyway, to be on the front row again is very good and I think we found a good bike setting for tomorrow's race. Casey (Stoner) is unreachable, he's on another level and doing an amazing job this weekend, but my pace is quite similar to Jorge's, (Lorenzo) so I hope to be at least constant for the fight with him.”

Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner took his sixth consecutive victory at Phillip Island ahead of newly-crowned World Champion Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo in second place, while Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow completed the podium in third place.

Weather conditions over the weekend were cool, with wind and intermittent rain also contributing to making the state of the track quite challenging for riders on Friday and Saturday. Track temperatures for the race were around the 30°C range making the softer option slicks the popular choice. All twenty riders taking selected the soft compound front slick, while all but one rider selected the medium compound rear slick which was the softer of the two options.
