MotoGP: Marquez Explains His Differences at Jerez & Austin

Marc Marquez entered MotoGP surrounded by hype and with high expectations. After a wet test at Valencia, where he showed he was fast, but not quite how fast, the Spaniard went to Sepang, where he posted very good times in a private test. At the full Sepang MotoGP tests, Marquez was genuinely impressive, never finishing outside the Top 4. At Austin, Marquez stunned observers. The young Spaniard, still only a rookie in the MotoGP class, ...

2013 Jerez MotoGP Test Day 3 Times: Crutchlow Tops Final Day Despite Last-Minute Shootout

Cal Crutchlow leaves Jerez as the fastest man at the three-day test, having set the quickest time of the event on the final day. Even more impressive for Crutchlow is that he set that fastest time in the middle of his long run, while he was working on race set up.

Valentino Rossi ended the day as 2nd fastest, confirmation of his best time from yesterday, with both him and teammate Jorge Lorenzo testing a new chassis for the Yamaha M1. Stefan Bradl took 3rd spot and finished first of the Hondas, while Jorge Lorenzo ended the day in 4th, choosing to run a 22-lap race simulation (full race distance is 27 laps at Jerez) instead of chasing a fast time. He did set his fastest time during that race simulation, posting a string of mid 1:40s.

Marc Marquez took 5th place, six tenths off the pace of Crutchlow, and the only Repsol Honda rider on the grid, Dani Pedrosa having decided to leave the test as he did not feel he had anything more to test. Pedrosa has been suffering with muscle cramps in his neck, a problem which he suffered at Austin, and returned once he was on the bike at Jerez. That, too, may have played a part in his decision to leave the test.

Alpinestars Motegi Leather Suit

Alpinestars quality and protection that won’t break the bank - that’s quite simply the best way to describe the brand new Alpinestars Motegi suit. This new release occupies the same price point as the Carver, but it has even more features to keep you safe and comfortable.

The Motegi suit is constructed using 1.3mm full grain leather for maximum abrasion resistance, with the panels held together using sturdy, multiple-stitched seams. One of the new features for a suit at this level is the use of external TPR armor on the shoulders. This is a clear improvement over the bare leather shoulders of the Carver. More armor is found inside, with CE certified Bioarmor inside the shoulders, elbows and knees. Those looking for more protection have the option using the three snaps between the shoulders to secure a back protector, and adding Bionic pads to the pockets in the chest.

As with most of their more affordable suits, Alpinestars designed the Motegi with a less aggressive cut than the ultra-aggressive higher end suits, meaning that it is possible to stand up off of the bike without it feeling like a workout. This doesn’t mean that it is any less comfortable on the bike, however. The Motegi features durable Aramidic stretch panels that run down the length of the underarms, sides of the torso, crotch and back of the legs for mobility. Aramidic fiber also breathes very well, which works with the fully perforated front panel to keep feeling fresh. The back of the suit is also designed to keep air moving with a perforated hump and a mesh panel at the neck.

If you’re interested the Motegi, or any other Alpinestars product, feel free to give Brad a call at 866.931.6644 ext. 810, or contact him through this forum. Is email more convenient? Feel free to send those to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

The one piece Alpinestars Motegi Suit is available in Black/White, White/Black (Pictured), White/Black/Red, and White/Black/Gold. MSRP is $799.95.

The front of the suit is fully perforated for maximum ventilation.

A fully ventilated race hump directs air down your back, while larger perforations give the air a place to escape.

The Motegi’s perforated leather extends to the legs as well.

TPR shoulder armor is a first for Alpinestars at this price.

Aramidic stretch material extends from the armpit to the wrist to help the suit remain flexible without compromising any protection.

2013 Jerez MotoGP Test Day 3 Round Up: Crutchlow Stuns, Lorenzo's Long Runs, And Injury Concerns

Three days of testing at Jerez is over, and the real star of the show is obvious for all to see: The Weather. Of the 18 hours of track time that the MotoGP riders had at their disposal, only about 4 were in consistent conditions, and that was in the pouring rain on Saturday. An afternoon of dry track time - well, dryish, with groundwater seeping through the track from the hills at Jerez which have been lashed by unusually heavy rain all winter long - on Sunday and a bright start to Monday morning left the riders hopeful, but it was not to be.

It took 15 minutes for the first rain to arrive. The track opened at 10am. At 10:15am, the rain started to fall, leaving most of the teams twiddling their thumbs in the garages and hoping for some dry track time. Dani Pedrosa gave up on the day altogether; he had only really been testing odds and ends, new rear shock settings and one or two other bits and pieces anyway, and suffering with neck pain from a strain he suffered at Austin, he decided to call it quits and go home. He missed a few dry hours at the end of the day, but given the stiffness with which he was turning his head to answer the questions of journalists on Sunday evening, choosing to rest his neck was probably a wise move.

While Pedrosa was on his way home, Jorge Lorenzo was doing yet another of his punishing race simulations, pounding out 22 laps of the Jerez track at the kind of pace that secured 2nd place for him at last year's race over 27 laps, a very strong performance given the conditions on the track. Lorenzo finished in a (for him) lowly 4th spot, but his best time was set on the third lap of his race simulation. This is the approach that helped bring him the title in 2012, and the comparison with Pedrosa's physical woes is a valid one. Pedrosa strained a neck muscle whilst riding; Lorenzo has been training both on and off the track to ensure he does not suffer such injuries. Lorenzo is ready to race, and by that, I mean the full race distance.

BMW S1000RR: More stock Horsepower than a Hayabusa

I thought they were supposed to be faster this year?

So first practice session done, and it's slower than lap record pace around the Indy track.

From the initial announcement:

"From 2013, whilst S2000 cars will still be eligible, the ‘Next-Gen’ cars/engines will then be progressively increased in performance and a turbo ‘over-boost’ facility be incorporated to allow a regulated amount of short power boosts during each race."

I'm a bit disappointed if the boost isn't going to get turned up. Less disappointed about the absence of "push-to-pass", but an extra 50hp for all the cars would really add to the spectacle, and make the cars a lot trickier to drive.

Wilson impressed on six-day Fiesta R5 test

Story from www.wrc.com

Eligible for the WRC-2 category in the World Rally Championship, the Fiesta R5 is a completely new model from M-Sport.
Based on the 1.6 turbo Ford Fiesta ST road car, the R5 features a newly developed roll cage, fuel tank and electronics, and a revised aero package to comply with R5 regulations. The car also features a new transmission system and a new engine – with a 32mm restrictor – developed by M-Sport.
Following a series of gravel tests in the UK, M-Sport test drivers Wilson and Elfyn Evans were in Europe last week, testing on tarmac roads in northern Spain from Tuesday to Friday and the rough gravel of Fontjoncouse in southern France on Sunday and Monday.
“It was really encouraging,” Wilson told wrc.com. “In fact the car surprised me, because it was our first proper tarmac test and we managed nearly 1,000km over four days. We used a really good mix of roads, including a section of a Catalunya rally stage. We got some useful gravel mileage in too, but because most of our running has been on that surface in the UK, it was the tarmac test that was the really important one.”
The M-Sport Fiesta is expected to be the first R5 car to be homologated and Wilson believes the specification will prove popular, and successful, in WRC-2.
“R5 regulations dictate that a lot of parts are carried across from production cars - like the turbo, for instance,” he explained. “But the great thing is that the parts that make the car really strong, like the suspension and transmission, are bespoke - and that’s where this car wins.
“In effect, you’re getting something that’s good value for money but that’s also very strong and will be able to compete against RRC and Super 2000s. And on most events, and on most surfaces, I think it’ll probably be quicker.”
The R5 is expected to make its World Championship debut on Rally Finland in August, but it could make some guest appearances before then.
“As soon as it’s homologated, the plan is to go to some rallies," said WIlson. "But before then there’s a chance of doing some events as a zero car, to get some more miles in a competitive environment.”

SGP bow for Buczkowski

Polish international Krzysztof Buczkowski is set for his full World Championship debut in the Motorsportwash.com European FIM Speedway Grand Prix in Bydgoszcz on April 20.The 26-year-old has been handed the wild card berth on his Polish home circuit, where he served as an SGP track reserve three times in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He scored a point in the 2008 meeting after Swedish rider Freddie Lindgren was excluded for hitting the tapes. The Grudziadz-born man should get more of a chance to make an impression this time around, though, as dons the No.16 race jacket and is set for at least five rides.Buczkowski proved his international class last summer, when making his Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup debut in the Race Off at Malilla on July 12, scoring 11 points from five races. The local favourite is joined in the meeting by Bydgoszcz team mates Szymon Wozniak and Mikolaj Curylo, who will serve as track reserves.Wozniak lines up at No.17 and Curylo dons No.18. They will appear if one of the main 16 riders is unable to take an outing through injury, illness or other reasons, or due to being excluded for a starting offence.Sweden's Krister Gardell will referee the first European-staged SGP round of 2013.

Britain's Crutchlow quickest at end of MotoGP™ pre-season

Britain's Cal Crutchlow moved atop the timesheets as MotoGP™ pre-season testing drew to a close in Jerez on Monday. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider led the way from Yamaha Factory Racing duo Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo. The third and final day brought yet more rain, although a dryer period in the second half allowed for some much desired laps on Slicks. Crutchlow was quickest before being demoted, but returned to the top in the closing stages; his best effort of 1'39.511 was the fastest of the three days in Spain, with Rossi just 14 thousandths of a second slower. In fact, no more than 29 thousandths covered the top three runners."We did some decent lap times and in the end we ran quite consistently, I was pleased," Crutchlow commented. "I feel good. It's disappointing to manage no more than 70 dry laps over three days, but to be at this pace is good and I think everybody is in a similar boat."I think it is very difficult to beat the Hondas of Dani (Pedrosa) and Marc (Márquez) at the moment. I think their package is stronger. We know Dani is obviously very confident because he went home today – so he is happy with the bike! We are still working very hard with the Yamaha, but it's going to be a big battle in Qatar."At Factory Yamaha Racing, the pair of MotoGP World Champions worked with an updated chassis – in contrast with Crutchlow who has had few new components to test over the pre-season period. Breaking into the top three on the final day was LCR Honda MotoGP's Stefan Bradl, who finishes fifth overall, although the German was one of several riders to hit trouble over the course of the test with a crash on Sunday afternoon. Álvaro Bautista was another and on Monday the GO&FUN Honda Gresini man was unable to ride at all, following a crash and consequent hand and knee injuries the previous evening.Fourth overall was Repsol Honda Team's Dani Pedrosa, who – happy with his bike and witnessing more rain on Monday morning – soon decided to end his test early. The two Repsol bikes sandwiched Bradl who was striving to fine-tune an optimum dry weather setup, with 2013 newcomer Marc Márquez sixth from Ducati Team's Andrea Dovizioso.Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team's Andrea Iannone, Ducati Team's Nicky Hayden and aforementioned Bautista completed the top ten from Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, assessing an assortment of new parts.Randy de Puniet had ended Sunday somewhat annoyed, having already encountered numerous problems before crashing and suffering burns. On a more positive note, the French Power Electronics Aspar rider does finish the test as the leading CRT runner and two places ahead of teammate and reigning class champion Aleix Espargaró. Between the pair of ARTs is the second Tech 3 bike of English rookie Bradley Smith, who aims to dial out riding errors during his maiden MotoGP campaign.Héctor Barberá led the Avintia Blusens charge from 15th spot, but it was a rather frustrating test as new FTR parts arrived at the circuit late due to the ongoing snow-caused travel chaos in the United Kingdom. 16th was NGM Mobile Forward Racing's Claudio Corti from Came IodaRacing Project's Danilo Petrucci, evaluating his 2013 chassis for the first time. Out of position on the final timesheet is Ben Spies, who – still recovering from his crash in last year's Malaysian Grand Prix – finishes in 18th position for Ignite Pramac Racing Team and did not run at all on the final day.Avintia's Hiroshi Aoyama racked up plenty of wet weather running (his first on the FTR) en route to 19th position, ahead of Czech rookie Lukáš Pešek's Ioda and Cardion AB Motoracing's Karel Abraham, who has converted from a prototype to a CRT chassis for the 2013 season. This week's 25-bike field is completed by PBM's Yonny Hernández, Gresini's Bryan Staring, Forward's Colin Edwards – who today focused on electronics work – and Michael Laverty. The former British Superbike rider continued to dial in the own-built PBM bike, but on Monday saw his agenda briefly interrupted by having to pull over with a locked up rear brake. At the end of this year's pre-season period the pack is separated by 2.9 seconds, which compared to last year's margin brings the pack over a second closer together. The top ten is also more bunched up, with the 2012 gap of 1.3 seconds having now been reduced to 1.1.The 2013 MotoGP™ season will begin under lights, with the Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar. The first track action starts on Thursday 4th April.

Alpinestars Jaws Leather Jacket

Spring is just around the corner, and that means a new riding season is just starting. That also means that new gear is being rolled out by many brands, including Alpinestars. One of their new releases, which is sure to be a hit, is the Jaws leather jacket. This aggressively styled piece combines solid Alpinestars protection with some new features to enhance both comfort and safety.

The outer layer of the jacket is made up of 1.3mm full-grain leather with Alpinestars’ tried and true TPU sliders protecting the shoulders. These details aren’t anything new, but the way that the leather sections are cut, arranged and interspersed with a variety stretch panels is. The pattern is very well thought out, with the stretch panels in the chest, arms, back and waist allowing the jacket to flex along with your body’s natural movement. More protection is found inside the jacket, with removable CE-certified armor in the shoulders and elbows. PE padding fills compartments in the chest and back, but they can be upgraded with optional Alpinestars Bionic Armor.

Alpinestars is producing two versions of the Jaws jacket - standard and perforated. The standard may not have the perforated front and back panels, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking airflow. Both models have large zippered vents at the top of each chest stretch panel to provide the desired amount of ventilation. The jaws also comes with a removable thermal vest liner, making it wearable in a wide range of weather conditions.

The new Alpinestars Jaws jacket is available in the following variants (some of which may be back ordered or available in very limited quantities).

Standard (Non-Perforated):
- Black
- Black/White

Perforated:
- Black
- Black/White
- Black/White/Green
- Black/White/Red

If you would like to order one of your own, check availability, or get expert sizing advice, you can get in touch with Brad through this forum or by calling 866.931.6644 ext. 810. Is email more convenient? Feel free to send those to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

The Alpinestars Jaws jacket is pictured here in the standard black version (photos of others coming soon).

Stretch panels on each side of the chest help this jacket fit more body shapes, more comfortably.

The back features stretch stretch panels arranged in the same pattern as the front.

Zippered vents at the top of each stretch panel on the front can be zipped open, closed, or anywhere in between for adjustable airflow.
